c_lou
With the price of gas and the "shortage" of oil to create more gas, should Nascar reduce the number of laps they run in each race? Perhaps not just Nascar but all racing leagues.
toddyboman
YUP YUP. I think all the fuel related events should cut back. To possible help the gas issue.
The_Kat
no cause it isn't gonna help if they do or don't.
PAhunter14
nope it wont make any differance anyway and besides i think they make enough money to pay for thair gas:D
Master_Chief
Nope. Maybe we could get the politicians to get rid of those gas guzzlers they ride 2 miles to work.

I also be that the increase in gas prices will cause them to charge their sponsors more which in return the sponsors will need to increase the price of their product that YOU and I are buying so again we get the short end of the stick..... Tominator
Don't think it would do much. I'm not positive about NASCAR but open wheels run pretty much alcohol I think. I think NASCAR runs a high octane fuel too. Lou or Matt might know better. I think NASCAR should go back to their roots. Stock car, period, not these things that don't even resemble a stock car. JJL
Let's just reduce the # of drivers. Say from 40 down to 25. Save fuel-better racing.
Texan_Til_I_Die
Found this interesting stat. Not sure of the validity, but... Of all the gas burned in the U.S. annually, Nascar uses .00133%. So in theory, if Nascar was banned, the average consumer would save 1.33 cents for every 1000 gallons of gas purchased.
OJR
I think they should ban all sporting events! Look at the fuel that would be saved! Jet fuel to get to the event, gas for vehicles to get to the event and back. Not only for the participants but the crowd also! If everything was canceled, it would have an impact! ruttinbuc
Regardless of what they do in any sport the fan pays the price in the end. This is where all this incredible greed started IMO! They give some guy a $1,000,000 to wear a pair of basketball shoes and the next thing you know kids are killing each other to have a pair. AdvantageTimberLou
NASCAR uses high octane Sunoco fuel. We buy our race fuel in 55 gallon drums to try and save money if $6.50 a gallon is saving money. We burn about 22 gallons on a typical night that is practice and a 100 lap feature. Fuel has gotten unreal as of late and the only thing that saves us some is we don't race every weekend. Maybe twice a month as our car is very expensive to have on the weekly track schedule so our costs have gone done from the past of every week racing somewhere. Another plus is our hauler is gas and not diesel so we are not paying close to $5.00 a gallon for that. Then again we only get 7 to 8 MPG whether pulling that trailer loaded up or empty, that Chevy truck loves her gas! Banning Nascar or reducing the laps is not going to help. These teams still practice a ton outside of the tracks they race at each week as they do that to get better. If you shorten the laps you have to get that much better and that means more outside practice and using more fuel. I agree we need a fuel alternative or tapping into new resources but that will involved the powers to be in DC that will look out for us. Chrud
Don't think it would do much. I'm not positive about NASCAR but open wheels run pretty much alcohol I think. I think NASCAR runs a high octane fuel too. Lou or Matt might know better. Alcohol would be a better choice. However, it isn't cheap. It's hard to beat the smell of alcohol coming out of the headers. Shorter laps would be much better for competition. Time trials to get into the show, Heat races with transfers and an inversion and a consi to make the Feature (the big show). Have heats be around 25 laps, consi's around 50 and the Feature 100 to 150. Change the restarts to the leader out front and double file behind him with lap cars to the back. Trust me, there would be just as many fans, if not more, attending and watching at home. The excitment would be great!
BowtechTurkeyHunter
LOL yeah less laps would fix the gas situation .... if you elimate all the fans that go to the races .... think about the ungodly amount of gas that is used just to get fans to the races .... oh and I dont think we are in 1941 and we dont have to ask ourselves "Is this trip really necessary" Jez we arent even close to a recesion. Chrud
I didn't say anything about saving fuel. A shorter race would equal more exciting racing. NASCRAP should reduce laps to make the sport more exciting. What has been the most exciting races this year? The Bud Shootout (70 laps), the last "dash" at Daytona and the last 50 laps at Richmond. Shorter races (less laps) would make much better racing.

Steve If you want to do that, then think about baseball games, football games, PGA tour events, basketball games, soccer, etc. Think of all those fans that had to drive to get there to root on their teams or athletes. Took transportation to get them there, if there was no sports at all then we'd save a ton in fuel or you can limit baseball games to 5 innings, football games to 2 quarters, PGA events limit to 2 days instead of 4 days, basketball games to 2 quarters, etc. Bottom line is people like their recreation sports whether its an engine or a ball hitting a stick or going in a net. Our nation supports our teams and we decide where we drive too and how much gas we use.
texastrophies
If you wanna save fuel, you should park all of the trucks. If all the 18 wheelers were parked, there would be plenty of fuel, plus if all the 18 wheelers were parked, we wouldn't need the extra fuel. I think common cents should come into play, where fuel use is concerned.
camoman1
I am by no means any kind of expert on fossil fuels...but is there really a shortage of oil/fuel ?? or is it just the fact that the folks we buy oil from finally got smart and realized they can charge us whatever they want for it...?? Reducing laps, less cars etc. is kind of silly if you ask me. If these folks can afford to play, let 'em, its entertaining. Maybe we should all hunt and fish less too...save the fuel it takes to drive to the huntin' grounds.

Guest Andrea
Everyone knows it doesn't get exciting til the last couple of laps anyway. Make it two laps. Run 3 or 4 different races during that day. Process of elimination.........the last race is for the winners of the previous races.
VABuckSlayer
Forget the gas... they should shorten some of the races just to make the racing better. Pocono is a killer to have to watch 500 miles. Should only be 400 at best. That's a boring race right there!! If they shorten some of the races then the drivers will drive their butts off the whole race to get out front. That would keep me from sleeping through half the race!
