Well I just bought a new truck a few months ago, but thanks to gas DOUBLING since then I have almost no choice but to trade it in for a car or truck thats good on gas. I am prolly gonna end up eating a few thousand on doing so, but I can't afford 105$ a tank! This really sux:(

My next car will be a Chevy Aveo, unless GM produces something better on gas in the next 2 years. My oldest son will be driving by then and he will get my truck to commute 10 miles to school. I commute 50 miles round trip, and I really hate $80 a week in gas too.

I can't understand why they don't produce that little 3 cylinder Suzuki engine anymore. I used to commonly get 55-58 miles to the gallon in my Geo Metro when I was in college.

Don't know Kyle, guess it all depends on what you want to drive and whether or not you want to be comfortable. You could get something comfortable or get a subcompact and be crammed. We had kind of considered a chevy impala at one time, they are getting around 30 mpg highway out of them even the ss with the v8. We ended up getting an 08 durango back in February, it is 4wd and has the hemi, still think even with gas prices it was the right thing to do with a family and 3 daughters. I do not like cars much, and just don't think I could do the crammed thing, but we probably will be buying a used car sometime in the next couple years.

Actually they dont get as good of mileage as people think. Im shopping right now and know a few people with them. New they get about 31-32mpg. The best ive heard was 33mph. That isnt bad but there are a HOST of other cars that get better mileage, for around the same price, and will last a LOT more miles. Here is the list im looking into... All around the same price range both new and used.....

Honda Fit - Averages 34-36 mpg (confirmed the mileage)

Honda Civic Two door - Averages 35mpg highway

Toyota Corolla - Averages about the same (confirmed mileage)

Both Honda and Toyota are famous for running well over 300k miles before you need a new engine.

I just got an Aveo a couple months ago. I have about a 100 mile commute a day to work and back so I needed something real good on gas. I drive all highway and get about 35-38 mpg. Rides nice too. I'd reccommend it.;)

Actually you need to get inside of a sub compact. They addressed that on all of them. There is far more room in one than you would imagine. I know a guy that is over 6' tall driving a Honda Fit to work every day. He doesnt have any issues with the size of the car......

Jeraime I'm going to have to disagree with that one. I shopped real hard for a Corolla or Civic and there is no way you are getting one of those for the same price as an Aveo....at least around here. If money isn't a issue I would definately go with a newer Corolla or Civic, but I was finding Civics for 7 and 8 grand...sometimes even more.....with at or near 100,000 miles. I know Honda makes a great car but I'm just not paying that kind of cash for a car with that kind of mileage. I bought my Aveo for not much more then those prices and it only has 25,000 miles on it.

Man! The car market is different down here!

You can buy a brand new Toyota here for about $13,500. The aveo is running around $13,000 new. The Honda Fit, new is $14,300 for the sport version. The new Civics are higher but if you get a car about 2 years old you can pick one up for around $13,000 with very few miles on it.

Heck, I looked at a Civic Hybrid last week with less than 30k on it and they were only asking $17,900. That is more than I want to spend on a commuter however.

Jeramie, where are you shopping at? I'd like to come see the prices your quoting cause thats better than down here in texas. My only problem is I have limited credit, I had **** financing my truck, and I'm worried I won't be able to trade it in and be able to finance again :(

I just picked up a 95 honda accord with 84k miles on it for $4000... It's a good price compared to what I've been shopping for plus the used honda prices keep rising. It looks new and has been well maintained. I really didn't want to buy a car right now but had no choice with gas prices. At $4 a gallon it'll pay itself off in a year... My truck will just sit in shop unless I really need to use it.
