WHISKEYSWAMP
I may see if I can just find a lil 3-4 thousand dollar car. But I tend to travel alot so I need something I can count on for a long haul I'm in the same boat... I originally wanted to buy a $2k or less beater just to drive around locally but then decided spend the extra cash on something with low miles for dependability on longer trips. wtnhunt
Actually you need to get inside of a sub compact. They addressed that on all of them. There is far more room in one than you would imagine. I know a guy that is over 6' tall driving a Honda Fit to work every day. He doesnt have any issues with the size of the car...... I am not huge by any means, but at 6'2", I seem to eat my knees in several cars. Have not seen the inside of a honda fit, whenever(sometime in the next 2 years) we do get a used car it will probably be something along the lines of a chevy impala, toyota camry, or honda accord. Bowtech_archer07
I've heard the Chevy Colorado with a 5 cylinder engine gets about 25 mpg and has great power. You might look into that.

Jeramie
Jeramie, where are you shopping at? I'd like to come see the prices your quoting cause thats better than down here in texas. My only problem is I have limited credit, I had **** financing my truck, and I'm worried I won't be able to trade it in and be able to finance again There are about 50+ car lots in Tulsa. The one I go to just to browse is Riverside Toyota. Also, pick up a "Car Trader." They have a lot of cars in that price range. They arent hard to find around Tulsa... Jeramie
Kyle, the difference between Jeramie and you may be the market. He may have more dealerships up there than what you do, and they are competeing against each other, just a guess though I bet youre right. On my drive through Tulsa I pass at least 6 major dealerships and thats not even getting off the highway. Do a search on www.yellowpages.com Look for car dealers in Tulsa. There are literally pages. OJR
I've heard the Chevy Colorado with a 5 cylinder engine gets about 25 mpg and has great power. You might look into that. That is what I have but I average around 20 with it! Sure beats the 13 I was getting with my 3/4 ton!:)
too_pointer
My father-n-law is on his 2nd Corrola. He has gotten up to 42 mpg on the freeway. Now, he is no speed demon, and I'm sure that helps. I also would love to have a Camry. too_

stevebeilgard
So is making pipe bombs as a senior prank!!!!! :D that one left teeth marks:D:D. surprised no one caught it. anyway, for all of you... replace your spark plugs with bosch platinum 4. you will get 2-3 mpg more right away. don't use a cheaper plug, as they don't work. i've had lots of chevy 350's, and it's worked on all of them. period. now, as for a new car with good gas mileage... fine. BUT, check out consumer reports first. most of them are death traps. if you want a death trap with good gas mileage, get a honda 50 motorcycle. about the same health hazard. JJL
In order to install the Bosch Platinum 4's in a dura-max you have to equip it with 'platinum piston return springs' first.
stevebeilgard
i love my dmax, but i hate paying 4.50 a gallon for the sludge left over by the refineries.... i want my say with the "big oil" boys. they are, in fact, fleecing us.

I am not looking forward to the fuel cost for the two hunting trips this fall. Fuel alone will be way more than the cost of my whole trip 2 years ago, license and all. $4.59 here today. nativetexan
Couple of guys I work with were in the same boat with their trucks. I told them before they up and got screwed on financing of a new car by trading in an undervalued truck they should get the payoff amount then a trade in value, subtract one from the other, and use the result to purchase a little high mile used car to drive back and forth to work with good gas mileage and keep their truck. This way, you don't get hosed on financing an economy car for far more than what its worth from the get go, and you still have your truck when you need it. Dealerships are having a hard time moving large vehicles, so trade in values are going to suck. If your credit is not the best, the only way to make it better is to pay off your vehicle. Buy a beater and keep the truck as a backup, repair your credit, save gas with the beater. I do know a couple of people who have traded in their trucks for economy cars and are pulling small trailers to go hunting.
johnf
I would get a small toyota. My brother is a service manager for a national used car dealership and they won't even carry the small gm's because there are so many mechanical problems with them. fly
Next month I'll be in the market. I suggest getting something with at least 30 mpg. I'll be looking for a Honda or Toyota (civic/corolla) 199(something). Can't afford a new one. I'll keep my F-150 for hunting and hauling, but the car will be my every day auto. Shaun_300
I used to drive a 2003 Cavalier 5-speed, with the Ecotec 2.2L in it. Way more snort than any of the japanese stuff and it'd get close to 40mpg on the highway driving 70+mph. On the way home from WI I got 41mpg running high test, the best I ever got. My truck right now gets over 20mpg, I'm going to put cat-back dual exhaust on it in the next couple weeks, that'll help with the gas mileage, a little more power and better sound. I know the Impala's are awesome on fuel too! They'll also get close to 40mpg if you don't drive the heck out of them! Personally being a GM mechanic I would NOT buy an Aveo, Optra, Epica, or Vibe. The first three are Korean cars (Daewoo) and the Vibe is a Toyota Matrix with different badges. No offense to any owners, but they are junk. And especially don't like the cold climates. If you're looking for a GM car that gets pretty good mileage look at the Cobalt or new Malibu.
