Nice...but weird...

It was a beauty of a morning in the turkey woods...too bad I didn't hear one gobble...

Went back to the state land, up on that ridge with all the scratchings and where I've been hearing gobbles previously. I go sit on my big fat log..it gets light...no gobbles...around 5:30 maybe thoughtI heard faint hen talk..didn't sound close...then I hear noise and a turkey flieso ut of a tree right in front of me and down the ridge and away:eek: It definitely probably saw my head turning...no idea it was there...no idea if it was a gobbler or hen...think I heard another bird fly down in the direction it had gone.

This is the weird part, it gets light, I get up and look over and someone had taken a rake or leaf blower..I think a leaf blower, and blew a path through the woods and around a couple trees!:confused::eek: Oh my gosh, be a real hunter and deal with the leaves...I don't even know if this is something they can do on state land....you can't even snap a twig. So I didn't know whether to stay or go. I didn't see an shells or feathers to indicate a bird was shot...but that doesn't mean much. Walking along I did find a wing feather or two....the turkeys must use this ridge alot for roosting and feeding and this is the same ridge that the one was gobbling his head off a week ago before a hen came in.

So I went back to the car and drove to a different spot...actually an area down hill of this spot and I had heard a different gobbler and thought this might get me closer to his area. Found some flat hardwoods...a creek... more turkey scratchings all over...sat and called for 2 hours at least...clucks and purrs, yelping once in a while. Heard a hen twice way off but that was it.

Went to a new spot at 10...on another trail we use to take the campers on and it goes part way round a bog...well I missed where our trail comes in, ended up on the other side of the bog, then got lost off the trail for a few minutes, found the trail again, and went home:D:rolleyes:

I get home, my mom says she thought she heard 2 gobbles...I said "Like this and made my gobble impression, lol" She said yeah...though she's not 100% sure. I went up back for an hour before noon, didn't hear anything, saw farmer spreading manure. Went home:cool:

So what should I do? I only have tomorrow and next Saturday to hunt.

Considering that ridge on the state land has alot of sign, should I go back tonight and hopefully roost some turkeys? I'd go in at a different spot though..don't want to get caught.

Or go upback tonight, by chance that I hear a bird gobble and if I don't hear anything, go to the state land....

I don't know if the gobblers are done for the season? Any late season tips or tips in general?

They're not done yet. Heard 5 birds on the roost this morning. Went after the two "mouthiest" ones...they hit the ground and went silent. We set-up in several locations and did some light calling but got no responses. On the way home we checked out the farm where we were gonna hunt this morning and wouldn't ya know it...the 2 big ole longbeards that we've been after for the past week straight were strutting out in the field with a couple of hens. We slipped around and got in front of them. They were working their way towards us...then the hens veered off and started going back the other way. I did some light yelping and they gobbled 5 or 6 times but eventually just followed the hens. We'll be back after those dudes in the morning. I've never had to deal with so many hens in my life. All of the longbeards that we've seen in the past week...no matter if its been in the morning or in the evening...have all had 2-5 hens with them still. Hopefully, there'll be a good hatch this year and a ton of poults for the fall...;).
