Strut10
Well.........it's over here in the Rain State. Went out this morning and got in on a good gobbling bird on the limb. Not gobbling hard............but good. I easesd within about 100-125 yards up-slope in some mature oak timber. It was the perfect setup. Big timber between him & me for an unobstructed approach. An access road behind me that ran down to a small field behind the bird. He could either stroll right up through the woods or toss into the field and walk the road. Whichever. Didn't matter. He was gonna die. At 5:45 I would have bet a feller a 20 dollar bill I would kill this bird . I did a flydown at just the time I figured it should be happening. No cackle. Just a flydown followed by some subtle clucks and yelps. Daylight conditions being what they are now.........the bird should have been on the ground by 5:45. I'm almost positive I heard him fly down.............at 6:50!!!! Never heard another peep out of him. I stayed motionless and watching until after 8:30. Nothing. Ignoramus............ Go figger. #1 rule of turkey hunting: Turkeys are ignorant. Anyhoo.........I wandered around the rest of the morning, striking nothing. I did walk up on a new fawn and found a pileated woodpecker's nest tree. Also found ginseng a couple places I had seeded it many years ago. Kinda neat. All in all a good end to a short season. Still thought I was gonna hammer that joker. Just goes to show................the more you know...........it still doesn't make any difference. Rem308
Yep, that's how it goes sometimes. Earlier this season, I hunted before work one morning, I had one gobbling HARD about 100 yards from me...i softly called and he'd boom back. I never seen or heard him and at around 7:15 or so, he finally flew out of the tree...very aggrevating. I chalked it up to him being a wise old bird, because he lived to see another day. buckbuster11
I've had a few other people tell me of birds coming off the roost way late in the last week or so. Like 7:00-8:00 in the morning. Very strange. I can't confirm or deny because I haven't ran into a bird in the last 2 weeks. One of the slowest seasons I can remember here. Time to get serious about deer. Turkeygirl
LOL! Nice end though..Like a little over a week ago when I had a bird gobbling his head off for an hour straight...then that hen came in and wouldn't run away and she went in, heard him fly down and that was it...sometimes the squeaky wheels don't always get the grease, lol

Guest Phil-Bert
1 May 2008 was a glorious day for me. I've been hunting that ole elusive Tom for 4 years. The past three years have been here in Virginia. Down here if you don't belong to a club or know some one you are out of luck. Well, to say the least I have been going back home to Pa to deer hunt and have been telling my brother in law I would be up for Turkey hunting. Well this year I was able to go and the the first Monday it rained so hard I didn't even go out. My cousin called me later that day to say he did and was frozen and wet. (Typical Pa weather) Well I went out on Tuesday and got nothing but wet myself. Wednesday found myself with with a 76 year gentleman and friend. He took to a place that I will never forget. Well nothing happen that except for us jumping a hen. My friend couldn't go on Thursday so I went out by myself. Heard my first deer snort in the woods for the first time. WOW what an experience. That ole deer wanted me out of those crab apples. Well about 0745 he came after some calling. (Which I did) long story short. My 12 gage 3" spit out hot shot and it was over. my first ever Tom 8 " beard 3/4" spurs. You should have seen my life long huntin Brother in law's face when he jump off of the couch when I said I have a present for you in the back of the truck. Man what an experience. Needless to say that Tom is on the wall. Love those Pa woods.
PA_RIDGE_RUNNER
I am always in utter amazement at how a bird with a brain the size of a marble can make us feel so stupid and empty handed. On the other hand if we got one everytime we went out it would be shooting, not hunting. If you really want to be brought down many notches toward total humbleness go turkey hunting.
