O.k. Guys and gals I thought that maybe we could make a post about the mental part of archery.

What do some of you guys do mentally to prepare for a shoot? Whether it be indoor, 3-D, Field or Target. What is does your shot process consist of? Figured we could see what works others that might work for us.

I've shot Canadian nationals 4 times and at the world championships. Mental prep is huge and if you ask any winning archer they have multi day processes that the go through to get ready for a shoot.

I start morning of. I get up, exercise and then get to the venue early. I stretch, warm up, and shoot some practice arrows. Mentally I keep a regimented shooting cycle. Indoor events give you 2 minutes to shoot 3 arrows (except in the vegas international, 3 minutes). My shooting cycle is timed through my breathing and my actions while shooting. I take between 1min 38 and 1min 47 to shoot 3 arrows.

When trying to focus there are too schools of thought. 1: focus 100% on the shot, block out everything else, nothing else exist. 2: focus on something else. Use muscle memory and be confident that you know how to shoot a 10x and lock your mind on something else. I sing in my head.

Hope this helps

The mental part of archery is what separates the top shooters from the rest of the field. I have read several books and listened to audio from several of the top mental coaches, and the one that has helped me the most is Lanny Bassham. He teaches you to practice a routine enough that it all becomes a sub-concious action so you don't have to think about it. Then, when you do think, make sure you don't think of anything negative. You can literally train your mind to win. I have let myself get away from the mental game somewhat, and it shows. I have my Mental Management Journal at my feet right now as we drive through Ohio, so I plan on being more successful in the near future.

Jesse always had me put my "ducks in a row" as I shot each target...another area with which I've not been as stringent as in the past. It would start with stepping to the stake and end with the follow-through.

Seems this post has helped me already...I realize I've got to work on some things before Metropolis!

Best of luck to you all!

Ginger
