natethebowhunter
How should i hook a shiner when setting them under a float??? I am mostly fishing for pike if that makes any difference. I caught a few by hooking the minnows through the back right under the dorsal fin but im not sure if that is the most effective or not. Thanks
Guest Andrea
I always hook them thru the eyes. They last a lot longer that way .I don't punch it thru their eyeballs....but close to the "skull" inside the eye socket.
Shaun_300
I always go right behind the dorsal fin like you do, seems to have the most natural look under the water. They can swim good like that. We've had lots of success doing it that method while ice fishing in the winter and bobber fishing in the spring.

Tominator
We always hooked them in the dorsal too. My uncle will sometimes hook them through the lips.
deerkillr777
when fishing minnows for trout i use a needle to thread the line threw the mouth and out the butt hole and then slip on a treble hock might be able ot try the same
RangerClay
When using a bobber I usually put it behind the dorsal. I have found that it puts the minnow off balance and he swims more to correct it. It makes more action from the bait and therefore is more attractive. Guest Andrea
Well, I fish in a river and with all that current.......putting the hook thru his back kills him faster. He can't swim correctly. But thru the eyes he can keep his head pointed upstream. And...............he can't see what's about to kill him. (hee hee hee.)
LifeNRA
In a lake, either behind the dorsal or through the lips, or the eye socket. Try it all ways and let the fish tell you what they want. In a river always through the eye socket like Andrea mentioned. The lips work too but walleyes tend to rip them off, unless your using a stinger hook. Dubie
I don't use live little minnows ever, but when trying to catch big pike, I'll net some suckers, use a needle to thread some string beneath the skull and over the eyes. I stick a hook under this string, attach to a leader. Then I hook another hook on a leader through the tail. Attach both leaders to the line and wait for big pike...
