Strut10
Just picked up the latest addition to my mudhole stomper collection. She's a Winchester Model 70 Classic Sporter (pre-'64 type action) in .300 Wby Mag. In its own right it is a mudhole stomper of stout proportion. But I've got other ideas for it. I do believe this will be the donor gun for a project of monumental stature..........a rifle to leave the .243 & .270 crowds seeking some serious counseling. More on this as a project develops. This is gonna be so good!!!
aksheephuntress
...Wow!...-Sounds real nice, Strut!...-Can't wait to see a picture of it..and to hear how She shoots!
hangunnr
I knew you wouldn't pass on that one. That was too good of a deal. Were you able to determine if it is indeed a express length action? hangunnr
Strut10
I knew you wouldn't pass on that one. That was too good of a deal. You know me well. Were you able to determine if it is indeed a express length action? hangunnr No sir. Not definitively. I'll have to unmount (or at least partially) the scope and measure some distances. I did, however, take a 7-STW round with me when I went to the gun shop. It slid right down in the magazine box at 3.595" C.O.L. That means there's room for whatever other H&H-based critter a fellow would want to stick in there.
wtnhunt
Sounds good Don. Hope you post some pics too.
uncle john
Sounds to me like it would be a good time to invest in powder company stock. DS, Is this an honest to goodness pre-64 and you are going to dismantle it, or is this one of the later editions based on the old design? uj
Strut10
........ if this is an honest to goodness pre-64 and you are going to dismantle it, I may have to have some words with you. uj Let not yer heart be troubled, UJ. This is a late edition "Classic" series gun. It's got all the good pre-'64 goodies without the pre-'64 pricetag.
uncle john
OK, You had me concerned. I don't keep very good track of what Winchester is doing, or who owns it anymore. Any clues as to what yer buildin? uj #
Strut10
Any clues as to what yer buildin? uj #61 With finances being what they currently are..........nothing's going to happen immediately. However, I've had a long-time hankering for a "beyond 45 caliber" stomper. Maybe something that'll lay a dinosaur low when maxed out, but'll handle a certain variety of pistol bullets at moderate velocities when a guy wants to only kick out a couple of tons at the muzzle.
