TexasDeerHunter
I recently watched a hunting show and the host was shooting a custom rifle ( Ferguson Rifles ) that he claimed to sight in at 2 /12 inches high at 100yds and that allowed him to hold dead on out to 500yds. I went to the rifle makers sight and he has two custom rifle models in two calibers that he claims will allow the hunter to shoot out to 500 yds with no hold over. I know of no bullet out there except maybe a .50 cal that will do this. His two calibers were a 7 STW necked down to .257 , and a .300-.338. He gives no ballastic data chart, just his word that a 2 1/2 inch high at 100yd sight in will give you a 500 yd rifle with no hold over. Sounds like a bunch of bull to me. Strut10
Sounds like a bunch of bull to me. It is. Ferguson's round.......the 257 Hot Tamale shoots a 100 gr. bullet at 4060 fps. To be dead on at 500 yards it needs to be sighted in 8 3/4" high at 100.

Strut10
In defense of the guy's cartridge.......it is danged flat shooting. With a 100 yard sight-in of 1 1/2" high.........the bullet will be 4" high at 200 yards (its highest trajectory) and dead on at 360 yards. It drops to 4" low at around 420 yards and is 11 3/4" low at 500 yards. This is laser flat trajectory, folks. It allows a shooter to aim at the middle of an 8" vital area from zero to 420 yards and hit it!! No holdover!! Although I would not expect much more than 500 or so rounds of barrel life.........where else are you gonna find a .25 bore kicking out over 2 tons of muzzle energy????
uncle john
Everything in Texas is big, if that was where he was hunting. Iffn the deer he is shootin at is 30 inches down through, a dead on hold would get him. Like my neighbor always said, "Put salt on the end of the bullet to keep the meat from spoilin til you can get yerself over there and take care of it"

TexasDeerHunter
I figured the guy was stretching the truth a bit. Seems like he would have his facts in line before blurtin it out on national TV . I agree the Ferguson cartridges are some pretty hot rounds, but they need to do some serious research before making claims.
WaCoyote
Everything in Texas is big, Except the deer.
TexasDeerHunter
Except the deer. There are parts of West Texas and South Texas that have huge deer, 200-260 pounds. Everyone just assumes all our deer are like those we have in the Hill Country ( little bodies and big racks )
superguide
A huge deer dresses 250 pounds lol.
TexasDeerHunter
I know Superguide, the deer are nowhere near the size you are used to seeing. For most of the country that is a pretty good size deer, all Texas deer are not the 150 pound Hill Country variety. One day I will make it up your way to try my hand at bagging a bruiser.
