I don't have a crystall ball that will tell the answer to your question. Like Larry mentioned, being that there are so many manufacturers making the .17 caliber rimfires today, I feel it is safe to assume it will be around for a while. Since most of the guns can be converted fairly easily, if they do go the way of the dodo bird, you can make them a .22 Magnum and keep on chugging.

If you want one go for it. Every year buy a case of ammo so you get it cheaper, and in a few years, you may have a decent stockpile of ammo in case it goes away.

Do you think this will go the way of the 5mm Remington rimfire?

That is what is really keeping me from buying one.

I bought one of those Remingtons when they hit the market and after a year or 2 you couldnt find ammo for it anywhere.

NO, I don't think the .17 HMR or .17 HM-2 will go the way of the 5 mm Remington Magnum. For one thing, when the 5 mm came on to the attention of the average shooter, there was no internet, shooting forums or even home P.C.'s. The .17 Rimfires have received a lot of promotion by-way-of shooting forum websites. Also powder has improved since the 5 mm and I believe the .17's use a much different powder than used in the 5 mm. Also the velocity compaired the .22 Magnum and 5 mm there was not much different, while the velocity of the .17's are way above the two. The only downfall I can see is it's light bullets and explosive effect on small game making it usable only as a varmint load, plus the price of ammo. Now, the .17 HM-2 has been used on Squirrels with less destruction than with the .17 HMR or .22 Magnum. So I would go ahead and purchase a .17 HM-2 or a .17 HMR as I believe they will be around awhile.
