wtnhunt
Long story short earlier this week , my wife clipped a mailbox on her way to work just up the road trying to avoid some jerk in the middle of the gravel road coming around the curve. If it had been in my truck, it would not be a great big deal probably would not have done as much damage and I probably would not have even filed a claim, but this was her brand new durango that we have only had for about 4 months now. There was some damage to the fender, passenger side door, and the back quarter panel, just enough damage that most of the passenger side will have to be repainted, figured rates with body shops that it would likely be over $1000 for the repairs so decided to file a claim. Thought it would fall under our comp coverage since it was not a collision with another vehicle, but just checked our claim status with allstate and they are showing it as a collision. Difference in ded's are $100 on comp and $250 on collision. Any insurance people here, or anyone know if this is right.
popgun
Collision is correct. The only way that it would have been covered under Comprehensive is if the car had been parked, and attacked by the mailbox. Your insurance will also cover the damage to the mailbox through your liability, (property damage) coverage. ....popgun
wtnhunt
Thanks for the reply popgun. Guess $250 is better than the alternative of having to pay for it all out of pocket, however have to wonder if they will raise our rates. popgun
I don't think you will see a rate increase. The damage was minimal and there were no injuries. (Especially if you have been with the same company a few years and have a fairly clean record with them.) ....popgun
Leo
You can probably drop your rates substantially by increasing your deductible to $500. Lots of times doing that saves you more than the additional $250 (you might have to pay) in one year Ask your agent.

Neither of us has had any tickets in several years, and the only accident going back at least 10 years was a not at fault collision the wife was involved in about 5 or 6 years ago, we were not with allstate then though. You can probably drop your rates substantially by increasing your deductible to $500. Lots of times doing that saves you more than the additional $250 (you might have to pay) in one year Ask your agent. Thanks Leo, I talked about that with my agent when we setup the policy, and the difference in annual premiums for us at that time was really not all that much with changing around the deductibles. Our rates actually dropped a little recently when we added the new durango and dropped our yukon. Safety features I guess. Really I am thankful in a way I guess, it probably could have been a lot worse. Of course, had she had a head on collision in the curve, she was not going fast enough to have hurt her and the other driver would have been at fault, but then the damage to our vehicle would have likely been more than just cosmetic. stevebeilgard
i decided long ago to never leave the road. so, i'd have moved over as far as possible, and hopefully the person in the wrong would get out of the way. if not, he'll hit me simple as that. as it is, the person causing the accident gets off scott free..... Yep Steve. You are right, he got off without any losses at all, cost us $250 and all the aggravation.
