I have bin in the market for a new deer gun and was looking at the Savage Model 11FXP3 the 270 caliber and was wondering about what people think of this gun.

I don't have a lot of experience with the model you mentioned but I have a fair bit of experience with a Savage 116FCSS. I love this gun! I have the Accutrigger adjusted down to around 3-4 pounds and it feels nice and crisp. This gun can flat out shoot too! Took my first ever whitetail with it this past fall. The Savage guns are highly under-rated IMO.

My wife hunts with a savage bolt rifle in .243. It was a package scope/rifle deal from wal mart, also before the accu trigger. Got rid of the scope that came with the rifle and put a nikon buckmaster 3-9X40 on it for her. Lightened the trigger pull a bit with a little instruction. That rifle is a real tack driver.

Savage

I have a Savage pre-accu-trigger FP-10 in .308 out of the box the trigger was really rough, but it still shot less than 1" moa. I worked the trigger, bedded the aluminum factory pillar stock, and put a Mark 4 scope on it. I can now routinely shoot less than .6" moa groups.

You can't go wrong with the new models.

I own three Savages - .243, .270 and .308 - all pre-AccuTrigger. All are very accurate and were well worth the money. I own other, more pricey rifles, too, but like the Savage line just as well - if not better.

Some food for thought. I just bought a Stevens .22-250. Was looking for a varminter and came across this forum http://forums.handloads.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=9809&PN=1. After reading thru it and the testimonials of shooters who had bought the Stevens I bought the .22-250 for $279 on GunBroker.com.

The Stevens is Savage thru and thru - same company, same action and uses the old Savage molds for its stocks (not black like the Savage but a butt-ugly grey - which can be painted camo if you desire) which needed a little sanding to take off the rough edges. 10-15 minutes of sanding for a $150 to $200 savings of the already inexpensive Savage. But, it does have a heavy 6 lb trigger pull - liability issues. There are instructions available for working the trigger yourself or trigger kits and/or gunsmiths available for doing it for you. But, instead of a trigger job or a gunsmith I put on the E-Z pull trigger assist for $32. It reduced the trigger pull to less than 3 lbs and is a tack driver. My 3-round, 3/8" group at 100 yds is posted on page 10 of the above forum.

But, I still say no matter what rifle you get, accuracy is greatly dependent on the break-in method - for the first 20 rounds I fire one round and then brush the barrel (with solvent) 10 times after each round. Then every 3-5 rounds after following the initial break-in. I don't even try to sight it in until after the first 20 rounds.

The Savage line has been a great gun for me and I'll be hard-pressed to buy anything but a Stevens from now on. You can pay more - but why.
