Remington model 770

Recommended Posts

Looked at this rifle today at wal-mart. Price was $325. Comes with a Bushnell scope on it. Wondered if anyone has shot this rifle and is it worth the money? I heard that it is just a model 710 with a few upgrades. The bolt felt kinda stiff but other than that I liked it. What do you all think about the 770?

Never shot one of them myself, but have heard that the 770 is about the same as the 710. Think if money were the reason for looking at that rifle, as opposed to say a model 700, that I would look at savage or stevens rifles.

Remember too that the scope that comes with that rifle is a low line bushnell, sure it may be functional and you may be able to hunt with it, but it will not be the same as a better quality scope that performs well in low light conditions.

I bought a 710 when I first saw them some years ago. I wanted a rifle with a box mag and was never really happy so I traded it and bought a 700 mtn rifle. I would save for a 700 and scope or look around at pawn shops and check local papers for a better deal.

I believe I'd stay away from the 710's and 770's.

The rifles, themselves, are crude and pretty "user un-friendly". The included optics are of low quality, as well.

Were I going to purchase a low-end, throw- away rifle.........something I could get by with until I could afford a quality bolt gun.........I'd get a NEF Handi Rifle. They seem to have somewhat of a reputation for being acceptably accurate and you could, then, afford a little better glass for on top. Then you could begin to save for a rifle that'd make you both happy to shoot and proud to carry.

I don't think you'd end up being either with the 770. ;)

To Each His own

I did the crazy thing of buying a 770 in .243. It gotta tell you, I LIKE it. The action was tuff and the bolt stuck a bit until you get about 20 rounds thru it. For $300, it did what it advertised... Sighted in in 5 shots and was easy and accurate to shoot. I would have preferred a 700, but coulnt justify doubling the price to get one with a scope and all. Best of all, when the weather is crappy, i wont have any problem taking it out hunting/shooting whatever.

I agree.. not the best quality, but for the price I'm happy as a clam. I picked up a Weatherby Sporter SS 30-06 as my primary gun, but it was more like $800 to do it up right with scope and accessories... for $300, the 770 really isnt that bad. If you own exquisite quality rifles, youll be disappointed. If you want a beater that will produce, game on!!
