Ok..this ain't like Swampy....but believe it or not, I am getting interested enough in golf that I am looking for a set of clubs. Used is fine as long as they are in decent shape. Need the bag, everything.....have a couple of questions.

1) What do I need to look for in a reasonably priced set...(under $200)

2) What should I avoid..

Thanks

Avoid advice from Ohiobucks.

:D

Seriously, it's my opinion that it's the guy behind the clubs, not the clubs that make a golfer. Give me a $1,000 set of clubs, and I can whip muggs' butt just as easy as a $200 set.

This coming form a guy who posted a score of.......well I told you I wouldn't mention your score on here........it rymed with hifty-hine! :D

Swampy, it going to be tough to get into a complete set, bag and all, for under $200.00. We have a store called Play it Again Sports around here, you might be able to find some clubs in a store like that for cheap. Or, Wal-Mart / Target / etc can have complete packages for a low price.....

I would start with a professional at a golf store to get the right shafts, lie, etc squared away, then start shopping form there. Knowing what you need is step 1. You might find a decent set at a garage sale, but the shafts that are meant for juniors or seniors or ladies may not be the shafts meant for Swampy.

Things to avoid? Listening to advice from a guy who golfs twice a year is one thing to avoid. ***ahemChris***:D

Dunhams or Dick's Sporting Goods should be able to fit that price range Ken.

I believe Tiger Woods could take a K-mart brand of golf clubs and still shoot under par on most golf courses. Its the person holding the stick, not the stick holding the person!! :)

Welcome to a new addiction, frustrating at times but most times very fun!!

I got a new set of spalding clubs that was in that range. Of course that was about 10 years ago now. They work fine for me. Several of my friends have the big name clubs and never did much better than I. Perhaps I shouldn't mention this, but back in the day I used to go to the golf courses at night and wade in the ponds for golf balls (about 50-75 balls a night). I actually found a couple very nice clubs that way as well.

I've seen some really nice (and cheap) clubs at yard sales as well.

Ken I refuse to buy new clubs, most of these clubs are not used very much.

I love this web site for buying clubs, I've bought 6 sets for a number of people off of this site and every purchase has been great. By all means look around, the best deal isn't allways a full set.

Look at at least a 10.5 degree driver, more back spin less side spin.

Good luck.

Jeff

You'd have to show up first and we all know that won't happen.

Anyway, I have a crisp $20 bill says you won't. I had been playing for 2 months the last time we hooked up for a round.:D

anyways, Jason, I'd look into knock-offs (imitation top of the line). A lot of them are nice and have a really nice feel to them. The clubs definitely make a difference, but for someone just getting into it you don't need $1,000 to get you started, that's for sure.

Hifty-hine???? WOW

LMBO!!!

Yep, yet another promise broken by DB. He said he wouldn't post my score (before we teed it up).

I guess I won't tell you about the beautiful drive he put on a par 5 (#6 I believe?), second shot 20 feet from the cup, 3 putted for par. I won't tell you guys about that one. :D

Did you even have a par putt that day? Oh, wait a minute, I should cut you some slack, no golf glove really hindered your swing.....:D

And I never did mention your score, did I? FIFTY NINE! I saw David Duval shoot one of those back in '99 at the Bob Hope, but that was for all 18 holes.....:D

Stop hijacking the thread DB.

And yes, I had one or two par putts. Missed them both. :D
