sureshot
yesterday was our finals for my daughters ball year, its a tourny were all the teams play off for metals, pretty serous for 12 year old girls[and fathers and coaches lol]anyways a great game up and down a couple runs, finall inning they are home[last bat] and we are up by one with 2 on and 2 out,one of our best hitters up,it was about 90 degrees out and she had her shirt untucked, went to bat[have to have it tucked in to bat] 2 strikes and 2 balls, I was on first base coaching, she gets hit on the knee hard, she goes down, I ran over to see if she was ok and I told her to go to first, the ump said no her shirt was untucked it is a ball, I said why and was he said the shirt was untucked getting hit does not count I just kept it at that in front of the kids,,she was called out next ball, I went to the ump at the backstop and asked him if he could please show me in the book were it says if the shirt is untucked and you get hit in the knee its a ball and not a walk, I said if you get hit in the shirt yes, and he should of warned her before batting not once hit, then he started to get cocky and i walked toward him and told him he best not act that way,I was not happy he was about 17 years old and a cocky punk, I was not disrepectful till he got that way and I did it away from the kids in private, still the other teams parents were all talking behind my back, they were not brave enough to come face to face, Same crap happened last year at finalls, they get kids to ump finall games and they think they know everything and act like it, I am done with coaching,i am going to have a stroak if my blood pressure boils like that anymore, I just cannot take it, I am not a person who pushes the kids to win win win,I just want it to be fair and they all have fun, when crap like this happens no one has fun, sorry just had to rant for a bit , cool off the blood!! NS whitetail
I agree, he should have said something about the shirt before any pitch was thrown and yes it should have been a walk. Some people just like to show off when they think they can throw their weight around
OJR
That happens all the time! You were right and she should have been given first base!
superguide
Well buddy I'll be the devils advocate here-first don't quit coaching over some bad officiating-I've probably coached 4-500 hockey games and it happens from time to time. Next time call a time out and get her to tuck her shirt in before she bats-I'm a fat old man and I can survive a hot day with my shiort tucked in. Don't quit coaching-just learn to bank the fire once in awhile-if I can do it you can too. If the ump was a real problem-send in a written complaint to your baseball association-I've had to do it once in awhile over hockey reffs. Think I would try what superguide suggests, and no I dont think you were wrong.
stevebeilgard
superguide put it pretty good, bret. the batter was the first person at fault. she knows the rules, or should, and should have gone to the plate properly dressed. next, you should have noticed the shirt and had her tuck it in. that was the second thing that went wrong. of course, you are busy, excited, trying to think ahead, and can't notice it all.... the ref obviously noticed it, and HE should have stopped the game and told her to get properly dressed. letting the shirt thing go was his decision. but, then penalizing the batter was a poor decision on the ref's part. i know it was an important game. but, remember, it's only 12 year old kids. no pro scouts were looking... these kids all learned a lesson, and i'll bet it sticks with them. that is a thing of value in itself. that game would be forgotten by all concerned within a month. thanks to that ref, it will not be forgotten by most. and isn't every game supposed to be a learning experience. well, you all learned. wyohunter
the "ump" should of warned the batter of the shirt before she took the plate, he shouldnt of penelized her after she got hit, if he let her to the plate dressed as she was, then its a legal at bat, and she should of been awarded the free base...he was wrong and not you... sureshot
I went through all the manuals and no were does it say your shirt has to be tucked in, it does say if you get hit in the clothes and they are untucked or baggy it is not a walk to base! Its a ball!!I can see were he made a mistake but don't turn it around on me for confronting him,
superguide
You don't confront young refs-that's why there is zero tolerance for it in minor hockey. You make a written complaint to his head ref and let them handle it. Right or wrong the ump or ref is in charge of the game-even if you are totally in the right it isn't proper behavior by a coach.
