to Be honest i was plannin on usin my .280, its very accurate you can hit 10 bullets within a nickel at 500 yards, but i was wanderin if yall knew of anything better...

Thanks,

by the way, please don't say anything that military, like a barret, cuz i would never be able to get one of those, thanks

Wow, that really saying something considering you would have to hold anywhere from 3 to 6 feet over your intended target at 500 yards. I'd stick with that one....

You've got a 1/10th minute rifle and you're wanting something more accurate? Heck, that group likely won't open to much more than a quarter size group at 600yds and most deer I've seen have vitals larger than a quarter so you should be good to go with what you have....

BTW, you really need to get into long range match shooting with that rifle......you'll be famous...

Off the top of my head, I'd say probably just stick with what you're using. Sounds like your .280 is fairly accurate. You'd probably have to get into a semi-custom or custom rifle to realize a significant gain in accuracy.

Do you handload?? You may be able to tighten up you groups some with proper load development. thumb.gif

psh, i only wish i was able to shoot that good, i could shoot it in a silver dollar mayb at that distance(and thats a big mayb)... my grandfather hit that, and if i can find the target ill make a photo scan, its pretty impressive, i didnt believe him till he showd me the target and held up a nickel, i still wasn't sure, but 5 of the guys at the shooting range we go to swore he did...

anyways to answer strut10's question, they are handloads, i didnt makem, but my grandfather did, and it is a custom rifle, with a redfield 3x-9x scope :)

and to and to answer doubleA's question, no im not david tub, im Kevin Seets...

thanks for the help yall, i figured that b as accurate as i could get, but i wanted to check with yall just to double check:D

600 yards is a pretty long lob at a deer sized target. Make sure you're capable, then make sure you're shooting a bullet that will get the job done at that range. You'll want something that will still expand nicely at whatever velocity that's present at the target.

If you've been shooting those outrageous groups with match bullets, you'd better get started now working up a load with hunting bullets.

Why would you want to even try to shoot a deer at 600 yards? That is one heck of a long shot. Why not get the deer within a more comfortable distance, like, say 300 yards or so? Even 300 yards seems like too far for me, but we can't hunt with anything but shotguns and muzzleloaders here anyways, and I know things are different out in other areas.

But seriously, do you really feel the need to shoot at a deer at 600 yards?

y not?

it would b amazing 2 b able 2 say u shot a deer from 600 yards, and if i miss, then ill try a few more times that season, and if i still dont hit anything, then ill just go over to the feeder stand and pick one off, no problem & just try again next season. I have the rest of my life to go for a shot lik that, but its sumthin i plan on hitting b4 i die... its just something that sounds fun to me, even though thats a shot thats is freakin insane!!!

For most hunters I would agree that is insane, and think you answered your own question here.

Personally I know I have no business taking a shot that far on a deer. Too much to go wrong, and to be perfectly honest I will be the first to damit that I am not that good a shot. Would make me sick to think I could and wound a deer and have to track it forever, or possibly lose it.

haha, yeah, i definatly understand where ur comin from wtnhunt, if i understand right, haha, but anyways thats a very good point at that distance hitting a deer just right would be lucky (at this point of my shooting abilitys anyways...), because of windage, humidity, etc. but even though that would be a slighty cruel shot if not hit just right, who hasnt accidently shot a deer like that before anyways? latley ive been practicing at distance shots, and as i said, im a pretty decent shot, but im not near the shot my grandfather is, that y i might not even try next season, it might b a while cuz i plan on getting a kill, preferably a shot that drops the deer(good luck right...)

We all probably will put a less than decent shot on a deer from time to time, but the difference is, you are intentionally trying to create an accident in your scenario.

like i said, i wanna drop the deer, its a likely possibility that the deer might run off a bit, and im realy hopin that that doesnt happen, thats y im waiting a few seasons, make sure i have my shot down... its just the wind is such a killer!!! if only i could have a day with no wind, 5 in the morning, crisp, cold, and about 550-600 yards out i see a 10-point deer, i line up my scope, get it all adjusted real quick, take out the creep in the trigger (which theres almost none in by the way:D) breath out slowly and at the bottom of my breath...BAM!! perfet shot through the heart, and hits the ground...... thats about the time i would wake up haha...but i no that if i take that shot, or better yet wen i do, im going 2 have 2 look around at the trees, check out if its windy, and if its even windy enough for me to tell, then i would just have 2 w8, and that would be very hard 2 find a time when theres not much wind:mad::(:(....

Seets, my friend - the idea is to get as CLOSE as you can to the deer - it's what's known as woodsmanship and it separates the hunters from the tourists. 600 yards is the distance people see animals from when they pull off at the scenic outlooks in Yellowstone or Yosemite. Maybe try some of that unscented soap, get some camo, some rubber boots, and learn to walk with stealth. No disrespect brother, but you're in left field here!

Good luck!

I can't believe this whole thread!

As far as I am concerned, shooting over 500 yards is not very sportsman like at all because the chance of wounding the critter is just too great!

When I hunted, I never shot over 300 yards! If the animal was over that, I would try my darndest to get CLOSER and drop it with ONE shot!

I would much rather BRAG about a ONE SHOT KILL than some idiotic 5 or 600 yard shot!

Crazy!

With the same .270 rifle on deer, I have killed quite a few with one shot ranging from in close on out to about 230 yards. Matter of fact I think only once have I shot twice on a deer out of probably over 30 deer that I have shot with that rifle. I have lost one deer with the rifle(was my own fault), but the deer was pretty close to our property line, the deer was hit good. Was actually probably the closest shot I had ever taken on a deer with the rifle. I did not rush to track the deer, that was a mistake. Tracked the deer with good blood to our property line at the river, pretty good reason to believe the boy hunting the property behind us tagged the deer as his.
