Born4it
Hey guys and girls, I haven't been on here much lately, so I don't know what the hype is on new archery products. I'm looking to upgrade sight and rest, and maybe switch broadheads and vanes. I still read magazines, but I haven't had the exposure to pure human advertising lately. Here's what I'm thinking for each. Let me know what you think or suggest, and why. I shoot a Hoyt ViperTec, and I realize that I need to use what suits me best, but I need to know what to look at and try out! Thanks! Sight: G5 Optix XR Rest: Trophy Taker Shakey Hunter or G5 Expert drop-aways Broadheads: G5 Tekans, Montecs, or Rage expandables Vanes: Blazers from Bohning Take care, Ryan
Jeramie
The sight is total preference. There are countless out there to choose from that are just as effective as the next. The rest: TT, Shakey Hunter. They are GREAT rest. Also look at at Rip Cord. I personally shoot a Shakey Hunter and Love it. Ive shot several types of rest and it has been my favorite so far. Its not that the others arent effective, its just been the best. Montecs are tough. Great BH's but I didnt get caught up in all the hype. They sold like hot cakes for a while. When it comes to BH's im sticking with Muzzy. Cheap, deadly, and hard to beat. Vanes: Blazers are a great choice. I started shooting them a couple of years ago after some were given to me. At first I didnt see how a shorter vane could perform but I was WRONG. Shortly there after I converted my brother. Wonderful product..... RangerClay
Sights, http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67941 Broadheads, I will be trying the Rage 2-blades this fall. I have yet to hear anything bad about them. I use Carbon Express arrows with Blazers.
Tominator
I can speak to the TT drop away. I like my Shakey. I also like the Rage 2 blade. Shot 3 deer with them this year, lost the blood trail on one due to rain, but the other 2 expired quickly. Also saw the effects of a 3rd deer that my buddy Ohiobucks shot. The Rage went through both shoulder bones of a mature buck killing the deer within sight of his stand.
preacherman
Another vote for the Rage 2 blade here. Great broadhead. As far as rest, I would also consider the QAD, if you are going with a drop away.
hutchies
Good choice in sights.......Might also check out the spott hogg line. Rest........Trophy Taker all the way. Stay away from the ripcord. Bearing problems are an issue with them. The bearings get flat spots and they don't fall away like they are supposed to. Haven't heard any problems with the QAD Broadheads.........Sounds like you are wanting expandables. Both are a great choice.
toddyboman
I like my QAD drop away rest. Might check those out. Blazers are great.
Michiganbowhunter_SQ2
All great choices. Like Jeramie said, sights are sights and there are a bunch out there that are just as good as the others. I recommend a Ripcord or a Muzzy Zero Effect Rest. I had one problem with the Muzzy but the tech at Muzzy said it was something he had never seen before, between that and the service I am having a hard time letting go of it (QUICK email replies and sent me the replacement part free of charge) When the Muzzy broke I picked up a Ripcord, have put thousands of shots through it since and have had zero problems with it. NOw I am stuck trying to decide if I want to use the Muzzy or Ripcord..may just have to buy a new bow to put the other on For broadheads, there are a few out there that you can't go wrong with, Muzzys being one. Also G5 makes some great heads, I'll be shooting either the strikers (scary sharp out of the package) or the tekans this year. Blazer vanes are nice to, not sure if I'll ever use anything else. Born4it
I probably should have stated what I currently use...just FYI I have a Montana Black Gold Dusk Devil II sight, Muzzy Zero-Effect rest, 100gr. Montec heads, and stock Gold Tip 3inch vanes with a 3 degree helical turn. The rest is loud, and I've tried to fix it so the fletching doesn't hit at all, but it does no matter what (not a lot, but a little). Thanks for the replies! Keep them coming! Take care, Ryan
Leo
I probably should have stated what I currently use...just FYI I have a Montana Black Gold Dusk Devil II sight, Muzzy Zero-Effect rest, 100gr. Montec heads, and stock Gold Tip 3inch vanes with a 3 degree helical turn. Thanks for the replies! Keep them coming! Take care, Ryan I expect you may be disappointed if you discard the Muzzy Zero Effect rest, if it is set up correctly. Set up right that rest is practically foolproof. The Montec Heads which I've killed quite a few things with, work very well and are quite durable. You will get shorter bloodtrails with Rocket Sidewinders and Stricknines. But you shouldn't expect to kill multiple animals with the same head using expandables versus fixed montecs. You can resharpen and reuse the montecs several times, expandables don't seem to hold up the same. The Rocket heads really do some damage and penetrate extremely well. If you want the shortest possible follow up, I'm convinced they are the way to go. I agree you should look at the Spot Hogg sites. I've been looking at them real hard myself and a couple friends use them. They make high quality super tough stuff. No joke. I am also very happy with Blazers. They look funny at first but a few shots at the range will convince you they work superbly.
Rayzorp
If you like reading the mags, latest issue of Petersen's Bowhunting has a nice article on new sights for 2008, that with a copy of my favorite catalog usually helps me out Good luck !! Chrud
Take a look at Schaffer Archery arrow rests. They have a model that is designed to only fit Hoyt bows. I have the MAT-1 on my Switchback and it is the best rest I've used. It looks great on the bow, "locks" on the riser (no movement at all at the attachment bolt, unlike other rests) and it tunes very easily. http://www.schafferarchery.com/
Guest deer_slayer67
I love my QAD, it has been flawless so far, and i think blazers are the way to go.... But it's all personal preference! Good luck, Matt
