cflhunter
I was wondering if anyone has come up with an alternative, inexpensive:D, method of preparing small areas for plots. This year my huntin' buddy and I have prepared two small areas for food plots. We are planning on using Evolved Habitat's "Throw-N-Grow" food plot seed as well as their Gain fertilizer formula. So far we have been able to clear these thick, overgrown areas using our weed eaters followed by Roundup. Throw-N-Grow does advertise a "no-till" approach but I'm thinking Better Safe Than Sorry! We do have access to an ATV, however, no disc. I know there are several walk behind tillers available but man, those things aren't cheap! We might as well break down and purchase an ATV disc. Anyway, have any of you rigged or fabricated your own device to "quick till" and prepare your area for seeding? Any advice on how to go about using this product? Anything you'd be willing to share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time!
dogdoc
Lots of food plots are made with little to no equipment. Sounds like you've already done most of the prep work. The throw-n-grow will work fine if you do it right. What i'd do is broadcast the seed right after a rain and then use the ATV to drive over the seed and pack it down into the mud/soil. This works and it works well. I planted my entire duck pond this way--with no tillage and this is what it looked like a week ago:
Tominator
Old chainlink fence and some cinder blocks and you're all set.

gitcha_some
Those ideas work great. and you could always just rent a tiller if you want, it shouldnt take more than a days work id think
MUDRUNNER
I dug a 3' section of an old rotary hoe out of the weeds and rigged it up to pull behind the 4 wheeler. It doesn't work as good as a disk, but if the weeds are sprayed and dead it does the job with a handful of passes.
