Question for the long range shooters

Being from Illinois there has never been a need for me to shoot game at long distances. Rifles cannot be used to hunt deer and I don't hunt anything else in IL. that a rifle would be used for.

Recently I've started black bear hunting in Idaho. I love it and plan to continue. I have a Remington 300 ultra mag and shoot the highest power level (power level 3) bullets.

I sighted the rifle in at 50 yards because I was anticipating a shorter shot since baiting bear is legal in Idaho. However, I also want to spot and stalk if the opportunity arises which may mean I'll need to make a 3-400 yard shot.

Like I mentioned I'm dialed in at 50 yards. However, I took some longer practice shots and found I'm way off. At 100 yards I'm 8 inches high and at 200 yards I'm so high I'm over the target completely. What's going on?

How should I sight my rifle in for shots 40-400 yards?

If anyone knows of a good long range shooting book I'd like to know.

Thanks,

Frank

If it were me I'd sight in about 1 1/2 inches high at 100. I'm not familiar with the 300 Ultra's balistics but I bet you be dead on out to 300-350 where the bullet begins to drop. Then just shoot it at a 50 yard target to see where you are hitting, I doubt it'd be off enough to cause a miss or a wounded bear.

P.S. 300 Ultra Mag and your not an OTPG member. WASSUP!!!!!?????

Here is a link to Remington's ballistic chart for that caliber. There are 4 different type of PL 3 to choose from. But this should give you some ideal on what is happening.

http://www.remington.com/products/ammunition/ballistics/comparative_ballistics_results.aspx?data=PR300UM5*PR300UM3*PR300UM4*RS300UM2

For the most part, if you zero @ 150 yards, you should be at zero 50 yards and about 7 -8 inches low at 300 yards

If you zero at 250 yards, you will be about 2 inches high @ 100 and 12 -13 low at 400, and 25 - 30 low at 500 depending on your gun and which cartridge type you are using.

Yea, what he said.

I saw the ballistics you mentioned, which is why I was so shocked to be shooting so high. If I'm on at 50 yards, why the drastic change at 100-200 yards? Perhaps it was just me or a bad shell or something? Maybe I'll go to Missouri and find a shooting range and zero it in at 250 yards (using a sled). Then see if it drops at 50-100. I'll have to go to Missouri because Illinois doesn't have a long range shooting range that I know of.

I've seen the off the porch gang signature for some forum members but I'm afraid I don't know anything about it?

Not so sure what's going on.

I ran a 180 gr. load at 3300 fps zeroed for 50 yards. At 100 yards you should be 3/4" high. At 200 yards you should be 3/4" low. Are you shooting tight groups at 100 yards even though the groups are way high??

How should I sight my rifle in for shots 40-400 yards?

I like a long-range sight in that keeps my bullet no more than 3" above line of sight (that gives us an assumed 6" vital zone). For the example load I used above, sight in 2 1/4" high at 100 yards. That'll put you just a whisker less than 3" high at 150 yards. You'll be dead on at 275 yards and 3" low at 325yards. So with that sight in you can hold right on to 325 yards on deer and bear sized game. You will, the, be 10" low at 400, 24" low at 500 and 44" low at 600 yards.

If anyone knows of a good long range shooting book I'd like to know.

Thanks,

Frank

Sounds like an issue I had just before deer season when I shot my .300 WSM. It was dead on in moose season when I sighted in, then right before deer season I was shooting with my buddy and at 100 yards I was about 8" high, shot 200 yards and it was about 2 FEET high! Couldn't figure out what happened, but I looked over the scope carefully and realized the rear scope right was sitting on top of the base instead of hugging around it. The screw loosened off and I guess the recoil knocked the ring out of place. Good thing because I wasn't even going to bother shooting it since it was bang on in moose season 1 month before. :o:D
