Does anyone use one of these http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0049053228732a&navCount=1&podId=0049053&parentId=cat21350&masterpathid=&navAction=jump&cmCat=0314_gps-search_redir&catalogCode=QX&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat21350&hasJS=true ?

I just got on a lease that's 4 miles wide and 9 miles long and has very few roads on it. I've got about a 350 acre spot that I think I will be hunting alone and is only accessible by atv, but I haven't even been on it yet and would like to be able to get back to my truck without driving all day.

The reviews on it look great, but I'd like to get someone's opinion on them.

I won't be buying anything much more expensive so please don't suggest something full of bells and whistles.

Thats a problem right there John, having a unit that will allow you to use a mapping program will only make it better! You will be able to plot your hunting areas first on the PC. Save the info and store them to your GPS to be used later in the field. You can not install topos in this unit.

When I first bought a GPS I got the Garmin Etrex Vista. At that time it did not have the high sensitivity antennae like the newer units do. I ended up buying another unit that had all the bells and whistles! Sure, it will certainly serve its purpose! But if you have a lot of land, sooner or later you might have wished you got a unit with mapping capabilities.

I rode down there today on my atv and there are logging roads everywhere. Apparently there are about to log alternating 40 acre tracks on the whole side of the mountain. If they do it at the right time I'll be able to put in some food plots with very little effort. When they log an area they burn the brush and plow up the whole thing. The next spring they replant new pines. Hopefully they'll start logging soon and I can get some plots planted before September. Also I found a creek that I couldn't see on google Earth. Woo hoo.

How much more would i have to spend for the mapping thing?

$170 for the next unit up from the plain Etrex. The mapping software you can get later. Maybe Xmas! LOL! But at least you would be on your way! Here is the Venture from Garmin.

The nice thing is, you can save all your info on your PC. If you go hunting in another area. All you need to do is load that area into your GPS, preview any likely spots before you get there. Save any info when your done hunting, then store it back unto your PC. Then when your ready to go back to that spot again, just re-load it back in. Unless you buy a unit that has much more memory, or better a micro SD card. My Vista had 24 megs of memory, which allowed me to have half the state of Pennsylvania on it. Which was plenty! You said that land was 4 miles wide by 9 miles long. You will have more than enough room to store that, plus much more.

Also, you don't have to buy from just Cabela's. I bought both of my units from walmart.com, saved more money that way.

Here is the software,
