Darron
I just received my Cabelas Visa statement and found out I have $30 towards my next purchase. Since I am getting ready to buy a fall food plot seed, I decided to buy from Cabelas since I can get my seed for almost nothing. I have narrowed it down to Biologic Green Patch, Tecomate Ultra Forage or Cabela's Seclusion Blend. The area I am planting is a gasline right-a-way that runs through the North end of my families 100 acre property. I am planting an area that is about 110 yards long by about 20' wide. This plot receives filtered sunlight of about 3-5 hours a day due to tree canopy (I have cut some over hanging limbs down, but I don't know how much it really helped). If I can get something to grow in this it would make a phenominal fall/winter plot to hunt over due to its location. Out of those three, which one would you recommend? The tecomate mix and Cabelas mix both claim to grow well in deep wooded plots. Thank you for your recommendation.
dogdoc
Hey Darron---I have no experience with the Tecomate UF or the Cabela's brand but I have planted the Green Patch and it did absolutely great. The oats were a great early draw and the wheat/brassicas/clover lasted all winter (well until the brassicas were eaten to the ground). So if it was me I'd go with the Green Patch. The clovers are annual clovers but you will get some reseeding in the spring. good luck with your decision. todd
Darron
Dogdoc, Thank you for your response. I am favoring the Green Patch due to the seed blend in it, but the only thing that worries me is the shade factor in this plot. I wonder if the green patch would take off? After looking at the other blends that claim to do well in wooded plot such at Tecomote UF, they are basically the same except for the oats in Green Patch. I have researched on QDMA forums and I have heard a lot of good things about GPP. Green Patch Plus- Clovers, brassicas, wheat, oats Ultra Forage- Brassica, clovers and chicory Seclusion Blend- Brassica, clover, wheat After looking at these blends, the Cabelas seclusion blend is very similar to the GPP. The seclusion blend says it does well in minimal sunlight and tillage, so if I worked up the ground well and get some light in there you would think it would grow. I might just bight the bullet and give GPP a try and see how it does. If it does grow, it will be one heck of a fall/winter plot. I'll hammer it with some fertilizer and pray that it rains. Any more reviews of the above blends?
wtnhunt
Never tried any of those blends. Whichever you go with, good luck. Be sure to give us some feedback on it.
wtnhunt
Not to try to tell you what to do, but another consideration might be to hold on to those points(they do build), and buy your seed elsewhere. Seems you posted about another mix you were interested in. Cabelas points and bucks are great. Between points and bucks, should have about $100 worth here to use for my next order with them. dogdoc
if you can get 3 to 5 hours of sunlight you can grow just about any of the plants listed.
