TSVH fishing trip

Wanted to share a story. As some of you know I work at the Tennessee State Veterans Home. It is basically a nursing home for veterans/and spouses. The week before last we took some of our residents on a fishing trip. The activity director knew a guy that has a nice pond with a dock house. It has a deck that hangs out over the water so the residents can sit up in the shade and fish over the rail. We took 7 of the residents with us. Since I am a nurse and have an active fishing license I got to go with them. I was responsible for giving medicines/taking them potty and making sure they didn't get too hot. I sat on one of the banks with 3 of the residents that were in wheelchairs that couldn't get up on the deck. One of the ladies, whom had had a stroke, only had use of one hand, so I would bait her line and cast it out for her. Then the other two needed help to put the worms on the hooks. There was one instance where the lady had a bite so I had to put down one pole to help her reel in her catfish. While taking her picture one of the other men got a bite. I ran my butt off but had the best time. We overall caught about 50 fish and brought back 12 big catfish to the facility. I have never had so much fun. The whole way back to the facility the residents kept asking when we were going back. They are still talking about it today. I think there are about 25 residents that have asked to go on the next trip.

You know, most of these residents spent alot of their time in their younger days out fishing and it was nice to give that to them again. I honestly felt honored being with the veterans that day to give back a little to them. After all, if it weren't for the veterans we might not have the privledge of fishing in our lives.

Anyway, thought I would share with you all. I would love to post pictures but I can't due to privacy laws. :(

HAVE YOU THANKED A VETERAN TODAY?
