The Great Oklahoma Antelope Adventure....

Since I was lucky (more like blessed) enough to be drawn in on an Okie PH'rn hunt im starting a little log of sorts to put together whats going on with the hunt.

So far my blood pressure spiked and then finally returned to a natural level. Im excited to say the least but the real work has started.

I have to find a private land owner that will let an Okie from the opposite side of the state kill and animal on their farm/ ranch. I figured I could find some bait or hunting shop in Boise City Oklahoma but to no avail.

Hopefully this doesnt become an issue. I have found a couple of guides in the area but im sure it would be SKY HIGH to go out with a guide.

Anyone know someone in Cimarron County Oklahoma? :D

I dont think there is any public land out there. I did read about one place called Rita Blanco National Grasslands but havent checked to see if it runs into Oklahoma (from texas). I dont know if its even huntable other than "dogs".

They give out different numbers of tags for different dates. The one I was chosen for was 150 tags.

Gun....

Im taking my favorite rifle,

Ruger M77 (heavy barrel) chambered in .243, 6x18x50mm scope, and a bi-pod. She is a TACK driver. Im going to hand load some hornady BTSP in 100grn (IMR 4350 powder)! 350yds shouldnt be to much of a challenge.

Im also going to handload around 100-150rnds of hornady V-Max in 75grn if I can find the Prairie dogs too.

TPWD does antelope hunts on Rita Blanca, but I don't know if it extends into OK or not.

I got the number to the Cimarron county chamber of Commerce. It said they are looking for people to lower the Prairie dog numbers on ranches. Hopefully in exchange for a little varminting I can hunt goat too.

Im calling my brother on my way home to see if he can go...

I hunted out there 10 years ago and it cost $300 to hunt. I have a co-worker that works in the Panhandle, and he knows alot of the ranchers. If you want I could get some names from him so you can give them a call.

Please. Im looking for all the help I can get.

and welcome to the forms! ;)

Jeramie- Congrats on the draw!!! I'm excited for you. There are 15,240 acres of public land on the Rita Blanca WMA. Here's a link you might want to check out, along with a link to maps. Good luck...looking forward to hearing more about this hunt of a lifetime. Did you get drawn for buck, doe, or either???

  • 3 weeks later...

I have a ranch buttoned down! Im going to look into others so I will have a backup plan but for now it sounds great.

The guy is a Prarie Dog guide. I found his website and contacted him. We talked on the phone and he told me he would take me on a guided antelope hunt followed by one full day of prarie dogs for $100. Then the next day he called to offer me a land owners tag! It was in December so I declined.

Still, this could be a good thing! I get in good with this guy I can probably get a landowners tag off and on!

Hey I drew that hunt several years ago. There is public hunting with lopes on it if you choose to go that way. Some of the landowners will let you hunt for a price. The game warden usually gets bombarded with calls about places to hunt and runs out of cooperative landowners quickly. I'd load up and go out for a weekend and try to meet some of the locals. It works better than calling so&so brother in law, plus it would give you a chance to look over Rita Blanca.

call the local game warden. he'll help you out... he's the one who knows where the lopes are, and who will let you on to hunt.

I did that when I got a tag for u124 east of Pueblo CO. He said no priv land and he didnt know any ranchers( in other words he didnt want to hear from me). He suggested i go to the county courthouse and buy a tax map to find who owned what ranch. Yeah, right!

I drove around scouting 3 diff weeknds and finding no ranch owners I just went road hunting til a rancher came along. She was very cordial, told me where to go for antelope and gave me permission to hunt their place(which was not small).

Sounds like need to make one trip and knock on doors, thats what I did. No one turned me away. And the ranchers yard dogs didnt bite me.

Good luck.
