which TC Muzzleloader?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys:

Planning on getting a new muzzleloader and replacing my old Knight.

TC has been an incredible contributor to the 4-H shooting sports here in Iowa. I am lookin at a new muzzleloader and am looking at TC because of thier generousity to 4-H.

Which type to get.

ENCORE:

GOOD POINTS

1. you can switch barrels which I love

2. thumbhole stock

3. stainless barrel

4. black composite stock

BAD POINTS

1. no 1/4 turn breech plug

2. $

Triumph:

GOOD

1. tough weather gun

2. 1/4 turn breech plug

3. $

4. Weathershield coated

BAD

1. no interchangable barrels

2. no thumbhole stock

Omega:

About the same as the Triumph

A tough choice. I am leaning towards the Encore. Any problems out there with the breech plug removal. Knight is a pain in the *** to remove.

Thanks in advance

If you are looking for strictly a muzzleloader, go with the triumph. My dad picked one up a few months ago, the thing is flat out awesome. If you think down the road you may want to switch barrels, go with the encore pro hunter. I see you listed one of the encores bad points as "no 1/4 turn breech" I believe the new encore endeavor has that now, the breech like the one on the triumph. but it is still kinda pricey. If I were to pick between the ones you have listed, I'd go with the Triumph.

If you have your heart set on a thumbhole stock-Omegas come with a thumbhole stock, I about pulled the trigger on one until I realized I wouldn't get to hunt with it as much as the price tag would have been...They are out there though, I just have not seen one on the triumph though, good luck in your search, Eric

Take a look at the Encore Pro Hunter. Around here, the Pro Hunter is usually about $60 more than the original Encore. The extra features are worth a lot more than the price difference. The Flex Tech stock works as well as they say on TV. The 28" fluted barrel is a bit more accurate than the original Encore's 26" barrel. The Speed Breech is awesome.

However, if you decide on the original Encore, get the EZ Tip Extractor, it is about $15 (it comes standard on the Pro Hunter). Otherwise, I think you have to take the gun apart to get the breech plug out, unless there has been a design change.

I see that you have "price" listed as a negative about the Encore. If price is an issue, take a look at one of the "less fancy" Encores. I've seen a few black synthetic / blued barrel Encores around here for about $400.

I've got the Encore, and it's sweet. My dad and I are going to go out to Colorado elk hunting and I'm going to get a 7mm barrel for it. The breech plug comes out very easily, but the thing is kinda a pain to clean...you're not going to find a muzzleloader that's not though! It's worth it when you put your hands on those antlers!

Good luck,

Ryan

One thing you are not looking at is the one piece stock on the Omega. That is a plus. It is stiffer than the two piece stocks, can be bedded and have a floated barrel. Big + for me. Two piece stocks are a big - in my eyes.

The design of the Encore means you have to pull the firing pin and clean it when shooting stinky powder. It gets blowback of corrosive gasses and will rust quickly. I found this the hard way.

I have been an Encore owner for 10 years, so I have first hand experience. As a handgun, I like the Encore, as a muzzleloader, it's not my favorite. I have a bull elk tag for muzzleloader season this October in New Mexico, my TC will stay in the safe. My Knight will be accompanying me on the hunt. My Remington 700 ML will be its backup in camp. In case something happens to the Knight.
