superguide
What's best choice for a dog to track wounded deer with-our beagle was a total failure-it couldn't track an elephant thru jello-people we got it from kinda hooked us there lol. Just looking for a dog that will follow a blood trail.

mitrrophybowhunter
Re: Tracking Dog I used my mut a lab collie mix. I couldn't belive how fast she got on the trail. Covered 175 yards in about 10 minutes right to the deer.

Guest outdoorgirl
Re: Tracking Dog if you own a beagle for rabbit hunting you don't want the dog to track deer.....you'll be their all day trying to get your dog....and ruin your rabbit hunting. wtnhunt
Re: Tracking Dog Saw a show back in the fall where a guy was breeding dogs just for tracking deer. Seems like he was in Texas. I have heard of people using beagles and other breeds to, think that the dog has to be worked with early on though. A 5 year old dog that has never followed a blood trail may take no interest. horst
Re: Tracking Dog I read awhile back in one of my hunting magazine that basset hounds were a prefered breed for tracking deer. They are low to the ground so they hardly ever lose the trail, they can go through thick stuff other larger breeds have trouble in, and because of thier small size they dont alarm a deer much if they get their first and the deers still alive.Never seen one used myself but thats what I read LOL. MUDRUNNER
Re: Tracking Dog I CAN'T BELIEVE YOUR BEAGLE WON'T TRACK A DEER.WHEN I TAKE MINE RABBIT HUNTING IF HE CATCHES A DEERS TRAIL HE IS OFF TO THE RACES.TRYING TO BRAKE HIM OF IT THOUGH.BASSETS HAVE GOOD SNIFFERS TOO.LOTTA PEAPLE USE THEM TO HUNT RABBITS ALSO,SO THEY OUGHT TO TRACK A DEER. Wildlands we live on a ranch so unlimited area plus have four dog loving kids.
Shaun_300
Re: Tracking Dog i have to say that the best tracking dog would have to be the bloodhound. the beagles usually work, but i guess ya got a lazy one

SaskMan
Re: Tracking Dog I like the elephant in jello analogy superguide. lol I know what dogs won't do a good job, my lab, and my lab golden retriever mix, they're as useless as t!t$ on a boar. I'd put my money on a bloodhound.

superguide
Re: Tracking Dog Welll i did have the old black dog-Saskman-on the track but even the supereman of deerhunters couldn't find him lol. I was tracking a big buck a kid wounded once-it was a day after the shot and I'd beeen on him for several hours when a lady came along exercising her Chesapeake's-I put them on the track and we had that buck in 15 minutes.
