Guest tanipiaq
i was using my 243 to hunt some game the other day and they were about 300 to 500 yards away open sight. and i was having trouble finding where i was hitting. at a hundred yards i could get and half n inch away from the bulls eye. anywhere from 100 to 150 yards away i am dead on. anyone know how much i should move my rear sight to shoot farther game. thanks
Modillo
hey bud, for me thats simple, but for others i have no idea, i would take it to a range, and put the targets out at 100, 150,200,250,275,300 yds and raise your elevation to the according range, remember the more you raise you elevation the more you have to work to find the front post(bead, ramp Sight, what have ya) if you are set at between 100-150 yards keep it there, just hold higher, at 300 yards hold on the back of the animal and squeeze off a shot if you miss well you just missed thats all, thats the westerner talking in me, i was raised on the west coast and thats where i hunted up untill this year, but if you are set for 100-150 yds then another notch maybe two should do it. let me know where it hits. John:)
toddyboman
First welcome to the forum Now let me see if I understand....you was shooting at game with OPEN SIGHTS at 300 to 500 yards.....
wtnhunt
Welcome to the forums. Kind of confused slightly on what exactly you are asking as well. Far as expected drop on the .243 round from 150 to 300, it will depend on what bullet you are shooting. Generally speaking an average expected drop would be about 9 inches or so with a 100 grain bullet.
Texan_Til_I_Die
Welcome. I don't worry about it, because my tired old eyes can't see that far! That's why God invented scopes!
johnf
I can't imagine shooting that far with open sights. Kudos on being able to ask the question with a straight face, I couldn't.
007hunter
Easiest solution. Buy a scope!
Guest tanipiaq
thanks thanks guys. i would buy me a scope but right now i am invsting my money either on a .300 ultra mag or a .270 so ultil then i am working with what i got. which brings me to another question ? which would you rather have . 300 or the .270. alos what kind of scope would you get for it. johnf
I would rather have a 270 because of ammo availability, price and versatility. It's also more than enough gun for the vast majority of land critters on this continent. As for scopes, I would get the most expensive Nikon I could afford. If it's the cheapest one ($99 fixed 4X pro-staff), your still getting a good scope.

Depends on what you are hunting. For deer around here the .270 is a great caliber. For scopes, my personal choice would probably be something along the lines of a nikon monarch. pendog
Well i have to throw out a plug for the 7mm, i love mine and will hunt with it whenever the "game is on the line". Ammo is a bit $$ but i like to reload as much as possible.
snapper
I'd opt for the .300...out performs the .270 and would make a better elk, moose, bear gun than the .270. Plus, it will drop deer as well! On the orginal topic...maybe you should think about shooting at targets (paper) out to 300-500 yards before shooting at game. Plus, it will drop deer as well! Gotta agree here. The .300 Ultra Mag is probably the most significant development in factory-loaded cartridges in the last 75 years. There's nothing in North America it won't handle easily. The guns and ammo are both widely available and are reasonably priced. It's a win-win situation. On the orginal topic...maybe you should think about shooting at targets (paper) out to 300-500 yards before shooting at game. Agreed, again. aksheephuntress
...Glad I initially missed this thread.....especially since it was my "OFF" week of the month... ....Welcome to the forums, Tanipiaq... ...Oh...-by the way...-your name sounds Inupiaq....from the western part of Alaska- -You didn't by any chance hear about the 120 or so caribou that were slaughtered and left to rot on the tundra there a week and a half ago, did you???(see posted thread in the big game and exotics room, I just posted...-can you believe that?!-truly sad story...)
