willis smith
i have a place on the north santee river and across the river from me is the waterfowl management area and there are tons of woodys, green wings, and mallards. also across the river from me is swamp and rice pattys, down the river the Wma turns into just rice pattys. where do yall think is a good place to hunt all rice pattys or rice pattys and cypress swamp. also there are alot of shoveler duck. but lastly i cant ever get the woodys green wings or any ducks to come to the decoy setup. i blow the call right its just these aint no tameys they are all wild. (for the exeption of few mallards)
birdhunter39
in my own opinion i would hunt in front of the rice patties . as for your calling problem quit calling when the ducks start veering off , also invest in a mojo duck . quackmaster4
First, you have to hunt where the birds wanna be, so set up where you see them when you are scouting. This might sound obvious, but ALOT of guys don' seem to get it; just because you wanna hunt a certain spot doesn't make the birds wanna go there. Figure out why the birds are where you see them. I've had some success calling woodies, but they respond better to movement. I usually rig up a jerk cord to one decoy and use it among the rest. It works. You may be blowing the call right, but you might not be blowing it at the right times, or perhaps your cadence is off, or there may be another problem you might not be aware of. Do you have any experienced hunters you could get an honest opinion from? There's a heavily hunted spot on the river not too far from me. The birds roost on some ponds where no hunting is allowed and fly out to feed in the mornings. These birds get shot at almost every morning as they leave the ponds, and guys hunt the river all the time, calling at every duck that comes in sight of them. These birds fly AWAY from loud calling. I've had considerable success hunting a puddle about 100yds off the river. I'll put out 4 or 5 decoys; one of them rigged to a cord, and only blow some low single quacks when birds come near. Once again, it works. Good luck.
duxndeer
I hunt in Arkansas where there is about the same problem with different options for the ducks to go to. The main thing in duck hunting is scouting. Just like he said before," You have to be where the ducks want to be, not where you want them to be." Sometimes this means more work and maybe in some instances a less comfortable hunt but I will always take that over the rest of my buddies who hunt easy and kill one or two ducks. Try blowing slow soft quacks and maybe a few softer hail calls. Always remember in calling ducks " wing tips and tail feathers" that's the only time to blow.
