hammerforged
If you had to pick one 300 mag caliber, which one would it be and why?
Shaun_300
I'd stay with my .300 WSM! It's got the wollop of a .300 Win Mag in a short action round. Shells are like a jumbo .308 so they're easier to carry versus a full size magnum round.
Texan_Til_I_Die
.300 ultra mag because of the versatility.
terry264
.300 Win. Mag. for power, availability, choice of loads and price of factory loads. Probably more power than you'll ever really need.
Strut10
If you had to pick one 300 mag caliber, which one would it be and why? Tough call. The simple fact that I own three .300 Mags should be evidence enough that I'm the wrong guy to ask. If you are wanting the best, all around, cartridge and are taking into consideration cost, availability, efficiency, etc. then I'd say the good old .300 Win Mag, hands down. If you are looking for one cartridge in .308 diameter to do it all as best as a .30 cal can.......with no other considerations.............the .300 Rem Ultra Mag or .30-.378 Wby Mag are the undisputed kings of the hill. A happy medium between the two previous categories is the age old .300 Wby Mag. It's got a wicked hit on game. Factory ammo is pretty readily available (even at Wal-Mart). It's pretty much a puddy-tat in the recoil department, if you're sensitive in that area (the bigger .300's can be a tad more "bitey"). hammerforged
Okay, I've got a CZ Ultimate Hunter in 300 WinMag, trying to decide on a way to spend that stimulus check. So, I gather from the responses that my best bet would be the .300 RUM to add to the family.

If you've already got a .300 Win Mag, I'd opt to spend the check on something from a distinctly different portion of the "power spectrum". Maybe a .375 RUM or a .257 Wby or something that fills a niche the .300 Win Mag may not.
hammerforged
Thought that myself but the company I rep for won't have those calibers available for another year or so. I am trying to stay with calibers that I can shoot the ammo for free.
aksheephuntress
....the .30-06, hands down... -power, ammo availability and cost, versatility... -using 220 grain rounds in mine, I would feel comfortable with a brown bear encounter-(...don't know if "comfortable" is the word of choice however...lol ) -but, I really love my .338...(Browning A-bolt-) -if I would pick up another rifle, I would have to agree with Shaun, on the WSM appeal...-but, I have had my eyes on the Kimber .325 WSM.... wtnhunt
I was going to get a 300 win mag for my most recent rifle and even ordered the gun in 300 win mag, but unfortunately the dealer could not get the 300. To make a long story short I ended up getting a 7 mm mag instead. Here was how I spent my portion of our stimulus check http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74960. I still plan to get a 300 win mag, probably next year around June. Been looking at the tikka T3's online and at the remington cdl's.
