Guest du9207
im considering purchasing a new rifle any suggestions?? i want something with a small caliber. i saw the savage .17 hmr , the sales rep told me he has heard good things about the savage and accuracy of the .17 (im looking for accuracy between 150-300yards at range) i want something cheap no more than 400 dollars. the lowest i saw the savage was big 5 for $250. I haven't decided on the .17 im willing to change caliber to something larger and more accurate that you guys/gals might suggest.
doubleA
While most 17 HMR's are very accurate, when stretching the distance you speak of, it's a tall task. Out to a 100 yards or so, the little .17 shoots like a laser beam. Over that, it's velocity is falling off drastically and with it's light weight bullets, ie 17-20 grs it doesnt take much wind to blow off course. Dont get me wrong, they are very fun to shoot but IMHO the are best at 150 yards or less on critters, small ones at that. I think a .223 in a NEF or Savage/Stevens might be a better choice at the ranges you spoke of. While being a centerfire, it's quite popular and inexpensive and there are lots of choices if you do not handload.
Guest du9207
ANY specific model you recommend for .223 i want a heavy barrel just like the savage .
hammerforged
While it is over your price limit by about $150.00 the Tikka T3 Lite in .223 is an excellent choice.
Guest du9207
has anybody had any experience using the tikka t3 lite that hammerforged is recommending???
johnf
I might also consider the 22-250. It's got more punch than the 223. Around here factory ammo is cheaper than 223. Doesn't make sence to me, but it is.
mailmanmark
Tikka T3 ? Awesome firearm. Guaranteed accuracy. Great trigger. Would get rid of ALL my A-Bolts before my Tikka. My Tikka T3 in .270 consistently shoots .5 inch groups with factory ammo. With handloads........ 3/16 @ 100 yds. Need I say more...... Good Luck. I have another buddy who is on the county SWAT team and his sniper rifle is a Remington 700 .308. Both are sweet guns. I guess it depends on what you're doing with the gun. Just plinking, or are you planning on hunting with this rifle?
Guest du9207
yeah sorry about the .308, i want something in small caliber forget about the .308 something around .17, .204, or 22-250 i want feedback on what people have used with small caliber like these and what rifle they used with it
wtnhunt
Use a .223 for varmints here, but what I am using cost me a bit beyond what you mentioned you want to spend. Nothing wrong with savage bolt guns, have heard good things about the Stevens(cheaper savage) bolt guns as well. If I had to keep on a budget, I would probably likely go with one of those two rifles in a .223 or 22-250 for no reason more than that you know you can use those calibers effectively on yote sized predators and varmints out to 300 yards possibly more depending on your ability. Hoosierbuck
Consider in your price range: A new NEF handi rifle in .223 with a more expensive scope (they have them with heavy barrels), or A used Savage .223 and put the extra money into a good scope, A Stevens in .223 and again, good glass. Any of these three rifles are in your range or close to it, and if you are going to stretch yourself, the place to do it is on the glass, IMO. Mach1
My brother bought a NEF Handi Rifle in 22-250 with bull barrel last year. It's a pretty neat little gun that he's had no problems shooting yotes with.
