I Just baught a new home in a new area, that I did scout a little before we commited. There is a bunch of deer sign, and the area is all old woods and young woods around me. This is the first time I have changed my hunting area in 25 years and I don't really know the bast way to proceed to insure a great hunting future here. I have a creek-fed lake and a fair amount of federal forest land around my small lake front property. Can you guys help me?

I would first find where the deers bedding areas are, also find where the are crossing the creek, by looking for slides. your lake can be an excellent place to put a trail camera at durring the summer months, if you have any place to put a small food plot between the lake and the hardwoods i would reccomend that. once august and septmeber rolls around thats the time to really start looking as to where the big boys rome, their pattern will change during the late october and november months but they will stay roughly in the same vacinity, your main focus would be finding their bedding areas and where their crossing, also try and find paths merging into one main paths this is where you would want to put one of your stands.

If you don't already have maps of your area get some. You can start out with Google Earth or MapQuest.

I advise you to spend some time watching from a distance. Find the thickest cover and you'll likely find a bedding area. Then find water and food. The deer will likely travel through a low spot or thick cover to get to the food and water.

Post a map if you like and RT members can provide you with more precise info.

Find trails leading to bedding areas, watering areas and feeding areas. If you have a trail camera or two, set them up on the trails that have the most sign. Get know the individual bucks in your herd, meet up and coming herd members and this will give you the knowledge of where to set up a treestand along routes that the der are taking. I'd just try and take any deer the first year just to get experience hunting your new area. This will help you the best in my opinion. Good luck!
