cutting down the barrel

Recommended Posts

Right now on my gun I have has a 28in. barral that I use during the turkey season. I was hopeing to get it cut down to about 23 or 24 and was wondering what price range this could fall in. I was also hopeing to get it re threaded to fit after market choke tubes. The gun is a Mossberg Maverick 88 12 ga which is a model or the 500. Everything is the same between the two except the name. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Re: cutting down the barrel

Cutting the barrel only takes a hacksaw. Getting the muzzle square can be done with a reamer or on a lathe. Installing a new sight will cost more. You can probably get the job done for $50 or so. This wil leave you with a cylinder bore (no choke barrel).

You mentioned wanting choke tubes installed. This depends on the thickness of the barrel at the point where it is cut. Usually you can have it done. This job needs to be done on a lathe to be sure the pattern is true. Getting a job where the barrel is reamed and threaded crooked is a waste of money. Getting the barrel reamed and threaded for tubes with 3 new tubes runs about $150 to $180 depending if you want to shoot steel shot or not. Just having the barrel threaded runs about $85. There are only a couple companies I would have do this job. One is Briley the other is Seminole. This is not to say there are not others out there that will do a perfect job, or do not charge as much. These two companies are top notch and do good work.

Personally, I would buy a new barrel for the gun.

Re: cutting down the barrel

Another thing to keep in mind when cutting a vent rib-barrel (if this is a vent-rib gun) is the change in sighting plane. Generally, the rib lies flat on top of the muzzle. But when you cut the barrel back, the rib at the newly created muzzle will be a good bit higher. In the case of a turkey gun, you may have to go to adjustable sights or some kind of optics to correct the point of impact.

Another company that will thread barrels is Wright's Gunsmiths in Illinois. I have dealt with them and would highly reccommend them, as well.
