New to hunting coyotes

Recommended Posts

I am fairly new to hunting coyotes. I have a buddy with some land and says that he sees them a lot within 100 yards from his house. He asked me if I could come out and take care of them for him since he is afraid to let his dog out for an extended period of time.

My question is, What part of the year are they most likely to respond to calling? Would it be a hit and miss thing? Our season here lasts from may till march. Thanks for any help.

Most susceptible to calling in late winter. I really don't even start huinting them until after dder season. Your friend has a problem, because if an area will support coyotes (and almost any will) then there will be some around no matter how many you shoot out of there given the regular constraints on a guy. To seriously lower the population requires trapping or baiting, or other big time tactics. Regular calling/sport hunting isn't going to take them out of the area. It's fun trying, though. I keep having to go back to the same farms every year and chasing those silly varmint- oh darn! ;)

Calling coyotes will vary from state to state and even within some states. My best time to call has been in October for the past 3-4 years. I started keeping a journal several years ago just to see how and what effected our calling here in the open West Texas area. Looking back October has been by far our best month for calling predators, especially coyotes. Here we don't have a season on them, so we can call anytime a landowner or rancher needs us to. I would go any chance I had to see if I could help your friend out. Keep in mind that calling the same area over and over will educate them, making them tougher to call in.

You can call them just about any time of the year, and as stated, it may vary from state-to-state! I got three in 30 minutes one afternoon on Labor Day a few years ago, using a puppy distress call. I was sitting under a live oak tree, on a stool, and with no camo; had one come within 15 yards of me!

The puppy distress is a good one to start off with, because if they are nearby, they will come in almost immediately. Once you start hunting yotes, you'll become addicted! It is tons of fun!
