can't she give you pictures from that same cell phone??

She's not sure, since they rented the satellite phone, for this hunt. She said if she can figure out how to, she will.:D

She phoned me around 4:00 and said they were still in Anchorage, but would be on the trail first thing, early tomorrow morning.

They had to do some shopping in Anchorage for a few last minute items that they needed.

She is soooo excited :D

She found a 1/2 price deal on a beautiful new spotting scope, and just couldn't say no:), plus she found a really light-weight pair of waders, that she said looked like they were made out of Parachute-like material for the uppers. She thought they were awesome, because they were easy to pack, and light. She'll need them for crossing streams.

She also said she found this awesome walking stick, that converts to a Camera bi-pod, and has a little "V" thing screw-in, that converts it to a gun-rest.

She was tickled pink and proud as punch, when she weighed her pack, after all was said and done, and it came to exactly 40 lbs. :D

She said they might go, without the GPS, just to save on weight, but she will give me the coordinates to where they will be base camped tomorrow.

She also said thank you all, for the prayers. :)

She'll be calling tomorrow, from somewhere on the trail.:)

Update: Aug 08 .... approx 11:30 am

Well, Kathleen is still in good spirits, even though they got a bit off-track, and turned around from the get-go. She stressed that it was Terry's idea not to pack the GPS, because of the added weight, but they wish now that they did.

They got a little turned around going in, because there were so many different choices, when it came to head-trails. None of them were marked, so they had to make some educated guesses on which trail to start off on, and lost a few hours, because they picked the wrong one. They got back on track OK, and are now at 1700 ft. They now have to head back down about 400 ft, before heading back up again.

It's been really wet & rainy since yesterday morning, and still raining off and on, but they are both doing fine.

Kathleen said there are moose everywhere. They haven't seen any big bulls, but lots and lots of cows with calves. They had 1 cow follow them for quite a ways ...LOL:) She said there's been so many Cows and calves on the trail in, that they've actually had to stop and wait until they leave the trail before proceeded, so as not to anger Mama.:) Sounds like fun...eh:D

Kathleen had a Snowshoe Hare jump out on the trail, right in front of her, not long before she called, and said they are all over the place too. They're brown of course right now, instead of being in their winter whites:)

They hope to make their dropped stash, by this evening, but not sure if they will. The season doesn't open until Sunday Aug 10th, so they're not behind schedule, by any means.

Oh, I can't forget this little tidbit of info ..LOL. Kathleen said there is wild Bison sign everywhere back in there, and their poop plops are so big, she now understands why the natives used them for fuel. She was pretty impressed by the size of those Bison poops, so I thought it best to pass that info on ...LOL :D:D

Their dropped gear cash is at 38.27 minutes N - 63 degrees / 18.00 minutes W - 145 degrees.

She's going to either contact me again tonight, or tomorrow sometime. ;)

boy, i'll be following this post.... i really don't understand leaving the gps behind. it can't weigh but a few ounces. but, choices are choices

My guess it was a trade out for it and the new spotting scope.

I'd have felt better with the gps along than with the spotting scope. Anyhow Terry has been doing this long before the gps was around so this decision doesn't shock me as much as it would if someone else did it.

Update: Aug09, 12:30pm

Well, they are still around 3 1/2 miles from the dropped raft/etc., but finally making better progress. Between the rain, getting turned around a few times and having to hike an extra 7 miles or so to get back on track,..they are really wishing they had of brought the GPS with them. Lesson learned.

They also passed another group of hunters camped out last night, so they are not on the mountain alone.

When they got going again this morning, they realized that they had made camp, not 100 yards from a bear baiting station, last night. Thank goodness it was dry, and not in use.

Kathleen said there were coyote tracks not 50 yards all around the tent, and the biggest wolf tracks she has ever seen, around 100 yrds from camp.

She said the moose sign is now petering out, but there is now Caribou tracks everywhere.

They had to get the ropes out, to transverse a steep ravine, but all worked out well. "If they had the GPS, they wouldn't have had to do that, but, it's behind them now", said Kathleen. ;) (enough said)

On a more positive note, Kathleen said, it has finally stopped raining, and it's sunny. There is also fresh snow up higher, and that means the sheep will be down, just below the fresher snow somewhere. which should make it that much better for their hunting opportunities . :)

Special note from Kathleen to SteveB.:

"The MAX- 1 HD camo you sent me, is simply the most perfect camo for where we are hunting. Thank you !!!" :)

stay tuned;)

Bad News Update Folks Aug09 at 6:00 PM

One of the biggest hazards of this hunt, has happened. They made it to their dropped supplies OK, but a bear (or the bears), got to it first. :( Everything was destroyed, and they can't even find the raft. :(

If by chance they find it, Kathleen said she will try to call me back, but not to worry if she doesn't. She will call tomorrow.

Now the biggest problem with this problem is of course the raft. It was their easier transport out, especially in the case that she is successful getting her sheep. They packed in enough food to last them OK, but now...NO Raft.

They also can't get another equipment drop made, because the area is now closed to all air-traffic. It's going to be a long pack out.:(
