texastrophies
After learning that my son was chosen for a late season youth bull elk hunt in Utah, we decided that we would fly up over Labor Day weekend and do some scouting, since I had never been to Utah, much less hunted that area. So I bought plane tickets, and made car rental reservations. Well we just recently found out that Jake's first Freshman football game is scheduled for the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. Jake has already said that he wants to go to his football game, which I agree with him on that. My problem is I want to go to his game also. But I need to go to Utah, so we aren't fumbling around looking for a place to setup camp and also an area to hunt. I have a few prospects in mind from google earth on the hunting places, although it would be nice to see them in person, but have no idea on where we could camp at. I can cancel the plane tickets and just have a credit there, so that is not a problem, but what to do? I think I have decided, but am just looking for a few other opinions, also. JJL
Where at in Utah??? I'd check in on the DOW first, they're usually full of info. Then I'd go to the local gas station, they usually have all of the gossip. Then I'd hit the bar, they usually have all of the hunters. At least that's how it works in Colorado. AJ
Tough decision. If the kid is that gung ho about football, re-schedule the scouting trip. Since you said you can get a credit for them it may be the way to go. Personally, I would show the kid that its only his freshman year in football, there will be many more games to go. The Utah hunt may be a hunt of a lifetime. They have some huge bulls there. He may not get this chance again. Football will always be there. Tags are hard to come by. As he gets a few years older, he will have to compete with adults for tags. Take advantage of the youth hunt while you can.
stevebeilgard
missing a first football game would be tough. but, will he even play? i think the scouting thing is much more important, but do you want to go alone? i'd check with the coach and see what he thinks. if your son will be a bench warmer, go to utah. also, get your son's opinion. maybe his first game with you there is more important than filling his utah license. Texan_Til_I_Die
What kind of an idiot schedules a HS football game on the Saturday before Labor day?
texastrophies
What kind of an idiot schedules a HS football game on the Saturday before Labor day? Sealy I think we have pretty much come to an agreement that he will go to his game and I will go to Utah. I hate missing the game, but I know by doing it this way the week we spend in Utah will be good. I know if I went up there blind, and tried to find a place to set up camp and hunt, never having seen it before, I would get very agitated and irritable, which would put a damper on the trip and I don't want that. Dubie
If I were the kid, I'd turn in my helmet if thats what it took to get my sights on my first Elk...Then again, I've never cared for sports. The games interfere to much with hunting and fishing .
hammerforged
I understand where you are coming from here. 9 years ago we were scheduled for our first Father/Daughter Pheasant hunt in South Dakota. Neither of us had ever been Pheasant hunting before or knew anything about the area. We had planned a trip to visit friends and learn about the area we would be hunting, then we learned that her first Marching Band competition was at the same time, she was co-Drum Major. she stayed for the competition and I went to South Dakota. Made the actual hunt so much better and it has only gotten better each year since. Now I have both of my daughters going with me and last year the older one (she is 26 now) took her first Goose. We had it for Thanksgiving dinner.

R U gonna make it Colo too? I hadn't thot of it before but IF we get to go back to Crested Butte over Labor Day you could just camp with us. Our plans tho are not final yet. Hope to see you. Also do you still want to ship your stuff here to Pueblo? I have room in the garage if you want. Can do same for other RT'ers too.
