Buck calls??

I have used several different brands and currently favor the Buckroar by Primos. I can attribute the taking of several buck to the use a grunt call. One thing to keep in mind if you are hunting during colder weather is that your breath will condense inside the call and it will not work. One of the grunt tubes that work while inhaling might be worth looking at. I try to keep mine inside my coat between uses and have been known to carry 3 or 4 calls so that I have a backup. Grunt calls can be another tool in the deer hunting woods, but, like any other tool, will not work every time.

The Primos can deals always worked for me. I even shot one deer, hit the can and the other deer came back to see what is up. I think the roars and similar have a narrow window of opportunity over the cans or any tube call you might want to use. Learn to use them all sparingly, too much beat up the band and you will defeat their purpose. Good luck.

Have several grunt calls I have used Ruth, I do quite a bit of blind calling along the river. The best one I have is not from any of the big name companies, was a call I bought probably 13 years ago, and i have called in a lot of deer with that call, really wish I knew who made it back then. Simple O-ring reed type call, the tone of that call is better than any of the others I have. Have the ez grunter, the true talker, a woods wise, and probably 3 others. My old black grunt call goes with me on every deer hunt. My oldest daughter uses the ez grunter when she goes with me, she has had good results with it.

Been tempted to try out the buck roar type calls, but am a bit skeptical, seems this area has seen some overcalling. Actually watched a guy just off my property line a few years ago walk with his grunt tube calling as he was walking out after he replied to one of my series of calls.:o Sometimes the latest and greatest if everyone else buys the same type call, might not be at all effective or could possibly even screw up your chances.

Elkoholic's suggestion of keeping the call tucked in is a good one, pretty easy to slip your call inside your coat/parka when not using it, will prevent any freezing up.

The true talker and the primos buck roar are my two favorites at the moment. The buck roar is probably the one I prefer out of the two. You don't have you use it as just the "roar" call, to me it is one of the best sounding calls for grunts to, and you can blow as hard as you want to get that grunt sound and you won't end up hearing that goose type sound that a lot of grunt calls give out when blown to hard. Plus the wheeze call attached to it is a plus.

One other call that I have been tempted to get is the A-way outdoors bowgrunter plus....http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20712-cat20821&id=0026565290489a&navCount=2&podId=0026565&parentId=cat20821&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=QX&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20821&hasJS=true

i got a primos buckroar and i like it.

Same here. After I shot my six pointer with my bow, I had played around with my buck roar. He was with a doe, and was a ten pointer! Now, I had him so ticked off, the hair on his neck was standing up once I hit that snort-wheeze after I grunted. The doe was walking in as well. Learned a lot that day! Got him into about 40-45 yards in the open. Would have been an easy shot too.

It has been my experience to go easy on dominant buck calls. Unless, you know that the buck you are calling to is the dominant buck in the neighborhood. Then you are better off using or imitating a snort, wheeze.

Fawn bleats and young buck as well as doe grunts will not make bucks turn tail and run from a whoopin'. ;) I have a collection of calls from over the years. The two I like best are my little Primos buck and doe and my QuakerBoy Ridgerunner. They are not aggressive calls. A Kelly caller from the late 80's is also a good one.;)

the nice deer that I shot last year POSITIVELY would not be on my wall if I didnt have my truetalker with me. He was freshening a scrape in a creek 45 yards away and I grunted twice and moved to the doe bleat and he walked directly toward my stand about 15 yards and turned. I owe my deer to my truetalker and some luck ;)

I love my Buck Roar from Primos...another vote for that one! It makes great roars or growls, and it's the best sounding and "workable" grunt call I've ever used. Another awesome grunt call is the HS Tru Talker. I spun a running 144 inch 8 pointer around and brought him to 30 yards where he met my broadhead.

Good luck!

I use a Knight&Hale, an "EZ Grunter" I believe it is called. I use it in combination with real rattling antlers. Worked great a couple of years ago, rattled in a borderline P&Y class 4x4 that circled behind us just out of range of my compound. Also rattled in a spike that I got a shot at but missed at 25 yards. Still haven't gotten my first bow kill yet, but aim to remedy that! :D Hope this helps you though, Ruth.

Dakota :)
