Ice Shanty GONE!

My co-worker and fishing/hunting buddie, Bob D, went out today to get in some pike fishing. He saw that his shanty was gone when he got there. This was a very well constructed, instulated double wall, 5x8, with nice tin roof and the whole works.

IE: Heavy.

Not only that but he has always drilled holes under it at each end to put cables/anchors in to freeze and then attached the cables threw the floor and secured from the inside. Never left a rope or tow bar on it and never left anything in it to curb any would-be break-ins.

Now we had a few real warm days a week or so ago and he thinks the anchor holes may of opened up and possible the shanty was blown out and across the bay. It was very windy about that time too.

I have my doubts about that.

Its possible, but to me highly unlikely IMO.

The shanty was just to heavy and pushed very hard even on ice. Plus it was situated so the wind was t-boning the back at 90* to the runners. The wind would of had to spin the shanty 90* before it would of moved/slid.

I feel bad for Bob D and wish there was something I could do.

Furthermore, it really sucks since the spot is now up for grabs and its one heck of a pike spot. A ton of people know that too...

Looks like ice fishing will not be as plentiful this year as it normally is.

Sorry Bob..... frown.gif

Re: Ice Shanty GONE!

wow, that is NOT good!! i would be POed if someone took my shack too!! mad.gif yea it sounds a little heavy to be blown across the ice. you would also be able to tell if there was marks on the ice from the shack scraping across it. my shack blew into shore one year. we had 110kph (70mph) winds and stupid me only anchored it on the one side. it looked like she spun around and around and around untile the rope snapped and then it blew a quarter mile into shore. it was right in front of my grandma's though grin.gif so we didnt have to go looking for it. i sure did get a scare whenever i looked out and there was no shack though shocked.gif

Re: Ice Shanty GONE!

Its entirely possible the wind is the thief. This bay is absolutely huge, its hard to see the other side on a good day. Most of which is in Canada too.

If it was blown its as good as being stolen.

The winds get cranking up here too.

I had a nice 4x6x6 box stand on a 6' ceder post base with stairs nailed up the side at the end of my property. It was blown over twice.

The barn across the road from me was blown down 3 times.

And that 3 miles from the bay!

Its possible but unlikely. The winds were not that bad during the time in question IMO.
