Guest "RJ"
I hunt in northern Florida in an area that is loaded with bears. Does anyone know of feed that deer like but the bears dont? I had a guy tell me soybean but we have bears on camera eating it. Has anyone tried something like rice bran? Corn prices is going up and I dont want to buy corn just for the bears. Bears are protected here so they are here to stay. thanks RJ

BearClaw
We have problems with bears too so a few years ago I quit using my feeder. I use a trace mineral block and the deer are hammering it and the bears don't seem to bother with it. Works for me.
Guest "RJ"
I thought about putting out minerals. I am originally from Virginia and we always made salt licks and they worked really well. When I moved to Mississippi I tried it there with no success. I have since moved to Florida and haven't tried it here. Has anyone tried minerals or salt in northern Florida? Thanks RJ
Mirage
Rj, try hanging your feeder from a steel cable and use a pulley and winch attched to another tree to get the feeder up and down for refilling it make sure the feeder is high enough so the bear cant knock of the broadcaster. and far enough away from the two tree that suspend the cable the feeder is hanging from. So the bear dosnt climb the tree and grab the feeder. also wrap the tree with barb wire about 5 feet. You also could set up a bear proof feeder. the state will provide you with the blueprint on how to build it. with 3 inch schedule 40 pipe but that cost to much. i used the cable method and they havent touched it! Guest Andrea
I live in North FL and we have never had a problem with bears. I've never seen one while hunting. ( Would love to though) I would imagine they are gonna eat whatever you put out for the deer. Maybe bait the bears up somewhere else with a food the deer won't eat? Guest "RJ"
I had my feeder on a steel pole up in the air about 15 feet and somehow he destroyed it. Thats not really the problem, the problem is they eat all the corn and soybean. I have pictures of them being there all day long. NO break for the deer to come in and eat. I hunt in a place aptly named "Bear Creek".
Guest "RJ"
Has anyone tried the grape kool-aid thing for deer? I was reading on a forum and a couple of guys swear by powdered sugar, baking soda, mineral salt, and grape kool-aid all mixed together. If it works it would a cheap way to lure them in. HOYTnMUZZYboy
Im no bear expert... But im gonna guess if its gonna lure deer in... its prolly gonna lure bears in. Im sorry Im not much help, but I dont think you can feed the deer and not the bears at the same time. Like i said im no bear expert and maybe theres a way to do it, but it kinda sounds to me like the odds are stacked against you on this one... Guest Andrea
If it has sugar in it...the bears will eat it, lick it, destroy it. Good luck, I sure hope you find something that works.
hammerforged
I am in the Northwest corner of South Carolina and we have the same problem here. But the Mineral Blocks do seem to work better than anything else, I have pictures of bears checking the blocks out but then they leave them alone, the deer go crazy over them. Anything that has a sweet taste to it the bears are going to go nuts over and will do whatever it takes to get at it.
yooperkenny
Like others said "Bears will eat anything" dead or alive, plant or animal. So unfortunately if deer eat it, bears will too. Up here in northern Michigan we have the same problem until November or so when the bears start their long winter nap. It's not really hibernation but more of a deep sleep - do bears even do that in Florida?

Guest "RJ"
I can get a picture of the feeder setup this week. As for the bears napping it does happen, but about mid December. I put some of the koolaid mixture out with my game cam. We'll see if it works or not.
