mossyhorn
I have been thinking for a while now about starting a group that takes kids to the woods teaching them to hunt and about gun safety. My idea is too start a raffle that will run for X amount of time. Each ticket will be from 3 to 5 dollars. Each year I will choose 2 maybe more if I can get other people involved children ages what maybe 8-14 to take on a hunting trip. One will go on a spring turkey hunt and the other fall deer hunt. The money from the tickets will pay for their hunting tags, head to toe camo....if laws allow maybe a gun in an adults name responsible for the child. IDK I look at my sister in law (she is 15) and I wonder what is going on. When I was her age I was always outside riding a bike, hunting, fishing, or jut walking around. All she does everyday after school is MYspace, Eat, Myspace, sleep. The internet has taken over man. Wait I am sorry off track, But yeah tis will also be perfect for children whose parents have never been hunting or never have time. I guess it is kind of big brother program but with a gun. But what I am getting to is what should I do to start this, what do I need to know?
Bowtech_archer07
I can't help you with what you need to know very much. I would say definitely look into hunting laws about what you are trying to do, maybe even call your state's DNR and ask them for advice about what you are wanting to do. On the other hand, I think this is a great idea and I completely agree with you that kids need to get outside more, internet and TV is completely ruling children's lives now. I was like you mossyhorn, and still am. Whenever i'm not at college, I'm outside, hunting, fishing, looking for deer, or just hanging out with friends. During the summer, when i'm away from school, I watch very little TV, and the only reason I watch more at school is because i'm in a city with very little to do up here, but I still try to get outside as much as possible. Oops, I got off track as well. You might also want to call your local legislature and see if you can do the raffle, and make sure there isn't any laws or regulations against what you are trying to do. Again, I think it's a great idea and I hope it works out for you!! Keep us posted!
OJR
I am involved with the American Legion Jr. Sports Shooting program! It is a great program for kids 10 to 18 years old. They are taught safety and shot for precision with air rifles at 10 meters, (33 feet). We work with Fish & Game and use their indoor range. If you can find an American Legion post in your area, see of they would set up a club and you could get trained by a NRA instructor to be an instructor/coach! The program is the same one they are using in the Olympics right now! Great for teaching the kids shooting accuracy!

RangerClay
yeah i checked it out but did not see a kentucky chapter Don't be afraid to get something started in your state. I have been getting kids involved in youth fishing here in New York State for about 15 years. My latest venture is with National Teen Anglers, www.teenanglers.com . Scroll down the home page to NY and you can see my work. They did not have a NY chapter so I started one. You could do the same. I'm sure that whatever organization that you choose will be MORE than willing to help you get started. AND more importantly, once you get something started, others will step up to help you. RangerClay
Don't forget that most local 4H or Cooperative Extension offices have a shooting program and are always looking for volunteers.
pendog
I work for Big Brothers Big Sisters, some of the states have outdoor mentor programs where you can take them hunting and fishing. Kansas has a great program in cooperation with BBBS, www.outdoormentors.org. Call your local BBBS agency and ask them if they have this program. If not the other groups mentioned here are very good as well, best of luck and i commend you for wanting to mentor these kids in the great sport of hunting. Realtree did a couple hunts with our kids, one that i was able to attend we had a blast. Met some great people and helped the kids have a once in a lifetime experience. http://www.realtree.com/community/feature.php?ID=224 Im the tall one in the back of the group photo.
