WestKyTeacher
Not sure if this is the correct place, but the stumps are in the way of me managing my land. Does anyone know any tips for speeding of the decomp of stumps? I have several I would like to remove, and a dozer or stump remover is too expensive. Thanks for any advice. dogdoc
there are products you can put on the stump that speed up the decay process--you can purchase them at Home Depot/Lowes. It still takes a while though. One option is to burn them. Get a 55 gallon drum with both ends removed. Drill deep holes in the stump with a long wood drill bit and fill the holes with diesel. Let the wood soak up the diesel. Put the drum over the stump and burn the stump. This process works pretty good.

wtnhunt
Have burned a few out similar to how Todd describes, just with burned oil instead of diesel and without the barrel. Have pushed a few out with the tractor too. Helps up if you are going to dig them up, to leave 4-6 ft of stump so you can get leverage. WestKyTeacher
We are doing well. Had our first child a week ago today, a baby boy weighing 7lb 6.5 oz and 20 1/2 inches long. Winchester eventually passed away this past winter. The spinal damage was just too much for him to fully overcome. We tell people all the time how wonderful you were to help us out the way you did. The invitation is still open if you are ever coming by this way. Thank you.
dogdoc
Congrats on your new son--enjoy every minute b/c before you know it your hauling him off to school. I'm sorry about Winchester and glad I could help a little! todd
Hoosierbuck
My uncle used to dynamite stumps. I think you could buy dynamite at Farm and Fleet back then, though! HB
kidd
if you cut them low enough to the ground you can bury them with dirt that helps in the decaying process
starbux
if you cut them low enough to the ground you can bury them with dirt that helps in the decaying process That does work, but it's hard on chains. I'd go with the burning if you wanna work the ground for plots.
Ravin R10 man
I'd go with the dozer..stumps are gone and its quick, besides there is always dozer work that needs doing...clearing trails, brush, rocks, shooting lanes, etc.
Flintlock1776
I will take pics of the 2 stumps I am about to get rid of. Renting a stump grinder. They have two sizes one for $200 all day the other bigger one for $300. I will see which one is best for what I have to do.

WestKyTeacher
quick question, what is the purpose of the barrel? would it work without the barrel around the stump?
wtnhunt
quick question, what is the purpose of the barrel? would it work without the barrel around the stump? I could be wrong, but I think the idea of the barrel is to hold in the heat of the fire, make it more intense(burn faster and more complete). Also would help keep the fire under control if there was any nearby brush.
ny_gun
Have you looked in the yellow pages to hire someone to remove them? I had 3 stumps to remove. I looked in the yellow pages, called the first guy in my area. He came out that day with a tow behind stump grinder and removed all 3 stumps in 30 min for $120. The stumps were around 30 inches in diameter. The grinder he had was HUGE.
98chevy
Thatgs a good deal. I charged $4.00 a inch to grind stumps. I also hauld the shavings and dug most the roots up. I like the burning idea the most. Its fairly cheap(have u priced diesel) and its very effective. I also have used the liquid killer and it worked but took little over a year
WestKyTeacher
The diesel seemed to work some, but I guess I didn't let the fuel soak long enough before I set them on fire. It doesn't matter now, we are under a no burn ban since we haven't had any rain for over a month. Good news, my father might be buying a dozer and/or a trackhoe. LETMGROW
The barrel will keep the heat in to help burn the stump as well as keep flying embers to a minimum. I had a fellow tell me he poured C'Mere Deer on a stump and a couple days later the stump was nearly gone! Seems as though the deer destroyed it. You did not hear this from me! QDMAworks4me
Buring stumps does tak awhile if you have really big stumps, we have tried it a few times and it seemed like it took orever. We are talking about a 40" tree though. I would think small trees would not be to bad. I would guess the quickest way but most expensive would be hiring a tree service. wtnhunt
Good news, my father might be buying a dozer and/or a trackhoe. That is cool. Could really use a trackhoe here for a few days while the bottom is dried out.
98chevy
I dont know your budget at all But I had to grind 3 stumps the other day. And one was through a fence that was 34". So I got the little bitty one. I ground the stump in about 1 hr with all its roots that where every where along the top of the ground. I was very imppressed so i took it to my shop and grinded 2 30 " stumps they took about a hour also. My total price was $104.00 dollors. Now I kept it 24 hours for 4 hours it was like 60 bucks. Guest Mark_85
I know there used to be a product you could pour it o na stump and deer would basically eat the stump.
Flintlock1776
I was thinking of dynamite after this equipment did not do so great but opted for a large stump grinder:
