Guest waryk
I just bout a used mossberg 835 with a smooth baril and wanted to know if i could shoot slugs threw it .and if so what kind would be the best.
terry264
waryk, did you get an owner's manual with that shotgun? Read it if you did. It will tell you not to shoot slugs through an overbored barrel. I think they make slug barrels to fit the 835.

hangunnr
As Terry said, if you have a over bored barrel it is not recommended to shoot slugs throught it. Here's a passage from the FAQ page on the Mossberg site. "Can I fire slugs through my 935â„¢ or 835® vent rib, Accu-Mag® choke tube barrel? No, 935â„¢ and 835® field barrels (those with a ventilated rib) are "overbored," and the extra inside diameter may cause the projectile to "wobble" producing unreliable accuracy. A projectile may wedge inside the barrel causing an obstruction. Obstructions of any kind can cause damage to the firearm resulting in damage to the barrel and/or personal injury to you or those around you. Dedicated fully rifled slug barrels are available for the 935â„¢ and 835® models. Other 935â„¢ and 835® Accu-Mag® choke tube notes: Buckshot and steel-shot loads are not recommended for use with an extra full turkey tube installed." You can view the complete FAQ page here... http://www.mossberg.com/content.asp?ID=508§ion=resources You ought to print a copy of this and go back to the gun store and thumb tack it to the "gunsmiths" forehead. That guy is gonna get somebody hurt. Oh, and by the way.... Welcome to the Realtree forums!! hangunnr

RangerClay
The Original Brenneke Magnum Slugs are made for the smooth bore shotguns and work REALLY well. I cannot get a slug barrel for my gun and I have used them for years.
MichiganHunter
you should be fine, if its a NEW not like new to you used gun, most new shot guns have a tough enough barrel to take a standard slug, my dad has an older Ithica with a smooth bore slug barrel and he uses Remington sluggers in 2 3/4 and he has taken deer out to 80 yards, i would suggest that add on a fiber optic sight. I have an 870 super mag SPS and it came with a single white bead and i added on a turglo 3pt fiberoptic sight in about 10 minuets for turkey hunting and it's GREAT, u might want to give that a look if all you have is a single bead. bluelund79
Just have to reinterate what handgunner said-Mossberg 835 and 935's are overbored...no slugs w/o the rifled slug barrel. Good luck in your slug barrel search.
BowtechTurkeyHunter
you should be fine, if its a NEW not like new to you used gun, most new shot guns have a tough enough barrel to take a standard slug, my dad has an older Ithica with a smooth bore slug barrel and he uses Remington sluggers in 2 3/4 and he has taken deer out to 80 yards, i would suggest that add on a fiber optic sight. Should be fine could get his face blown off ... IT SPECIFICALLY SAYS NOT TOO ... why would you tell him he should be fine ... this goes against everything the manufature SPECIFACALLY SAYS .... you are comparing apple to oranges Ithaca makes/made there own barrells and they don't over bore them They are nothing like a mossberg barrell or even made the same way ... please dont take this advice ... wait for a slug barrell to be in your price range. Its simply not worht the risk. Steve
dsharp01
I bought one last year and it is stamped on the barrel "DO NOT USE SLUGS IN GUN !!!" So I would invest in a slug barrel if I were you. Might cost bout $150 but is worth not having to buy a new gun if it ruins yours.
stevebeilgard
i'm pretty sure you can get a slug choke for your barrel. i have the turkey barrel on mine, and just ordered a slug choke last friday for 44 dollars. the turkey barrel required me to have the 6" long choke, and i don't know what barrel you have now. stevebeilgard
ooops, sorry. it wasn't a slug chock i got, it was for steel shot. but, the dealer did say a slug choke is available. so, maybe check with your dealer and see if mine is stupid.... lol
lumleychad
I just bought a mossburg field 12 gauge that would fit a 500 pump slugster barrel you might want to see about that idea
WaCoyote
Guys!!!!! It has nothing to do with the choke!!!!! It has nothing to do with the fact that it's smooth!!!!! The barrel is overbored. It is not designed for slugs. Best case it may not be accurate, worst case someone may get hurt. All shotgun barrels are not the same. Browning and some mossy's are overbored for better patterns with BIRD shot. Not for slugs.
hangunnr
I can't imagine why the factory (you know, the guys who designed the gun) would specifically tell you to NOT use slugs if it was OK..... Could it be that just maybe they don't think it's safe to do so? hangunnr
