dfol20
Well I am still planning an elk trip even if it is still in my head. I want to start accumulating equipment but I don't know where to start. What do I NEED? What are some things that are nice to have in the mountains? What are things that people bring that they wish they would have left home? I really want to do a backcountry hunt, so I know that lightening the load will be essential. What do you all bring? texastrophies
You might check out this site. A lot of info there. http://members.tripod.com/~elkhunter2/index.html
m gardner
Are you going to hunt a spot where water is readily available? Most of the water is pretty nasty. Cattle roam everywhere. Even the clear streams you find may be fouled. I take a pump and Sweetwater's purification drops. They are the same stuff that your city puts in the water. Got sick once useing just the pump. That was enough. If the water is really stagnant you may want to pack water in before the season and cache it in spots you'll travel. coles
take anything you wanna take as long as you are willing to carry it all. lol. it always seems like something important always gets left at home. but basic camping supplies depending on the weather and temperature, all you hunting gear--basically same as deer hunting gear, ropes, just anything and everything that you might have a use for and are willing to carry. whitetailtrax
I'm sure the other lists are great. Here is exactly what is in my day pack (weighs around 25lbs) right now, as season is set to begin in 10 days: Two knives Leatherman tool Fold-up saw Rope Game bags - for protecting meat against flies in early season Toilet Paper Ribbon for marking blood trail flashlight headlamp extra batteries digital camera fire starter sticks waterproof matches Disposable butane lighter extra pair of light gloves stocking cap Hoochie mama cow call extra diaphram call grunt tube several granola bars or candy bars Three bottles of water emergency kit - band aides, Advil, medical wrap and tape binoculars - usually carry them around neck and not in pack wallet with tags inside As needed, I will also carry these additional items: Maps of hunting area compass cell phone lunch extrta clothing Obviously, if you are packing in, there are many more items you will need that will double your load or more. This is just day pack stuff. Hope this helps. Mark
stevebeilgard
will you be driving in, or packing in? that makes a major difference. i like a wall tent, stove, and lots of food to start with, then a great sleeping bag and mattress. you have to be fed, warm and dry to hunt.
