Leo Posted August 26, 2008 Report Share Posted August 26, 2008 Don't worry so much about brand. Unless you're buying singles out of a "bargain" rack you should get very functional carbons. The following IMO is more important. You really want a total arrow weight of at least 400grains for bigger animals. 450grains is even better. Try to get at least 10% FOC. You might need to go to a heavier head but it's worth it. Truthfully I think more guys should be shooting 125gr heads for elk sized game. FOC isn't just about stabilizing broadhead flight, it also helps keep the arrow penetrating on a straight path. On big animals an arrow that turns as it penetrates can cause you to miss vitals on even a well placed shot. You can get away with quartering shots on deer sized stuff and they are very effective and sometimes even preferred. Only shoot elk sized animals broadside with arrows. There simple is too much meat and bone to get through to the vitals on quartering shots. Don't risk it. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
