Shutter
Hey guys, I just got a rifled barrel and 4x scope put on my 870 wing master. Can anyone recommend an ammunition to shoot? I've always hunted with rifles in the past, and this is my first experience with a slug gun. (I'm hunting Illinois this year during 1st shotgun season) Thanks. EKYhunter
I have a 870 with a Hastings rifled barrel. I've had excellent results as far as accuracy and on-game performance with the Remington Copper Solid, 2 3/4" loads. I hear great things out of the Winchester Partion Golds and other Remington saboted slugs. Try different loads and see what shoots best. Stay with the 2 3/4" loads as they do tend to be more accurate.
Ohiobucks
Both my 12 and 20 gauge 870's like Lightfield Hybred EXP's.
Tominator
Both my 12 and 20 gauge 870's like Lightfield Hybred EXP's. So does my 870 rifled Express, 12 gauge. It also likes Winchester sabots in the 3" version.
beagleboy
I have had very nice grouping and success with Lightfields out of my Rem11-
Predator
I did better with Federal sabots than the light fields in my 11-87 rifled barrel for some reason. Would like to try the new Remington slugs. (See their website). You would hope they would work great in Remington barrels. Defintely agree with 2 3/4inches. Shot 3 inchers out of my Benelli Nova and it broke the scope reticle! (Yeah my shoulder complained a bit too). A pump is going to transfer all the recoil so do not get the fastest slugs. OR get a good recoil pad.
slaw
I'm trying out the remington buckhammer sabots, my H&R seems to really like them., got it to 1.5 inch groups at 50 yrds

Mach1
I've shot Lightfields, Rem Copper Solids, and Rem Buckhammers through my 870 slug barrel all with similar accuracy. I tried the Hornady's and could not get any consistency with them.
Shutter
Thanks for all the info. Picked up the Rem Copper Solids and will see how they do. They are a bit pricey though. $16 for a pack of 5. Hopefully I can get everything sighted in easily.
ny_gun
I know this might sound silly but you might want to try the Remington Sluggers. My father got a new 870 last winter and we have tried every sabot we could find and the Sluggers have constantly provided the best groups (5 slugs on top of each other @ 75 yards). I am sure they will not be accurate at really long distance but in WNY where we hunt you rarely get a shot longer than 75 yards. And the best part is they are cheep to shoot. RangerClay
Both my 12 and 20 gauge 870's like Lightfield Hybred EXP's. I'll second that motion!
bluelund79
I use Winchester Super X's in my Mossberg rifled barrel (2 3/4in) and in my 870, it likes the Lightfields 2 3/4in...Try the 2 3/4" as well, they have noticably less recoil... maddhunter
I've been getting 1 inch groups at 100yrds with Rem. Ultra Bonded sabots 2 3/4inch in my 870 Express 12ga.
WNY_Whitetailer
My Rem 870 with a Hastings rifled barrel likes Brenneke KO Sabots in 2 3/4"...The price isn't too bad to boot...
Predator
My 11-87 rifled barrel likes the Remington copper sabot slugs vs federal sabots I always liked before with another gun.
SIWhitetailHunter
I've also had very good luck with the premium slugs that federal sells. I own a Remington 870 20 guage, but they fire out of it very well. Or so I'd assume. They've downed plenty of deer the past 4 years. Good luck in Illinois, hunting the midwest is awesome...I'm glad I was born in Iowa. Oh and I believe the federal ones I shoot come in the blue box. Vital Shock or something along those lines. Tecumseh
I'm using Remington core lokt 2 3/4 sabots in my Mossberg 835,At 75 yards it printed a 3/4 inch group.
stcif
I shoot a Remington 870 12 gauge with a 2x7x33 Leupold shotgun scope and a Hastings rifled barrel. I shoot only Lightfield hybred EXP sabot slugs as they are quite accurate, and also 1 1/4 ounce. I've said this before, the deer doesn't know what hit them. A Hornady isn't going to kill the deer much quicker than the Federal if shot in the same place. The Winchester isn't going to really outdo the Remington Buckhammer if both rounds double lung the deer. I can go on and on. Try a few brands. Shoot what is most accurate and make a good shot. No matter the brand, if you do your part, the deer won't go too far. Oh, as for the prices of ammo now, it is through the roof and out of control. I used to get the Lightfields a few years ago for 6.99 a box. Now they are 15.00. Crazy. Good luck.
