Guest walksalot
I bought a Remington 700 SPS but hated the stock so I bought a wooden one at a gun show and had a competent gunsmith pillar bedded the action and install a Shilen trigger. I am having a time of it to get the rifle to throw anything tighter than a 3 in group. I checked all the screws and all but one were tight and that one was the rear screw in the trigger guard, I gained a quarter turn. I have tried different powder and am using 165 gr. Sierra Gameking bullets, Remington brass and CCI primers. I switched from the CCI primers in the blue box to the ones in the black box as this is what the factory puts out now and accuracy seemed to get worse. My set up is Remington 700 with detachable clip, Leupold Mounts and Leupold VX11 2-7 scope. Any suggestions?
wtnhunt
Welcome to the forums. What kind of accuracy were you getting before the smith worked on the rifle?
Leo
I'd be real suspicious the scope mounts are loose.
Texan_Til_I_Die
I'd be real suspicious the scope mounts are loose.Good chance of it. Also, did you do a proper barrel break in? Maybe it just doesn't like the 165 gr bullets??? Or it could be any of a number of things with your reloading method. Maybe you should buy a few boxes of different types of factory ammo and try those as a test. If any of them shoot better than your handloads, then you need to re-work your load. Guest walksalot
Thanks for the feedback guys, I appreciate it. Accuracy was never any good before or after the gunsmith worked on it. The scope mounts are tight. Before I buy any factory ammunition I have some 180 gr sierra bullets I will try. I may be fixated on the 165 gr bullet because I really like it for the 30-06. Guest walksalot
I just got back from the range and it was the bullets. My rifle doesn't like 165 gr bullets but does real well with 180 gr bullets. Trying to work up a load using 165 gr with different powder and seating depth while only changing one thing at a time can be chew up a lot of time and gas running back and forth to the range. Thanks again for your help guys.
Jeramie
Ive seen that before. I had a 700 that would not shoot the 150's but loved the 180's! They can be very picky!
