Gut Pile uses

I just saw a show on NAHC with Dr. James Kroll. They wanted to see what effect a gut pile would have on a deer. So, out goes the gut pile, up goes the trail cam. First ones inspecting the pile was deer, then birds that picked and ate it and finally a bear.

Their conclusion is gut piles won't spook the deer after you get one.

I will test that theory as on my property I think I got the opposite results. However, since I do finally have a trail cam it will be interesting to see what gets into my next deer gut pile.

Now all I have to do is get that deer.................:D

Wait until one of your buddies has to take a squat in the woods. Get a shovel full of guts. Very carefully sneak in behind him and quietly deposit the guts in the "target" area.

When he turns to admire his work (they always do). You will be rewarded by horrific screams!

:p

That's an evil prank. I would never do it :)

As an example or maybe an exception to every rule, my buddy Brandt shot a doe one time and dragged it to the edge of the field. We met up about 100 yds away from where he gutted the deer and was in fact dragging it down a horse trail when we looked back and saw 3 does standing over it. Not spooky at all.

I really don't see why a gut pile would spook a deer ? I mean if you stop to think about it. They have no clue what they are looking at or smelling. This would get their curiosity going if anything. Now if predators were hanging around it they might get uneasy about the whole situation.

Only if it is their guts it seems........................................

I have never noticed an effect.

I have killed deer out of the same stand on two consecutive mornings. The second after having field dressed the first.

This was also when I lived in NY and it was cold so maybe the scent was at a minimum. However, at that same stand, I have killed deer a couple of days apart and never noticed that a gut pile made any difference.

We had a pretty good yote population at the time too but I never seen one approach a gut pile during the day.
