MUDRUNNER
Here's the deal....I 've been wanting to get my fall plots seeded for the past week now,but we have not had a drop of rain in quite a while. We are supposed to get rain Friday, and I was thinking about planting on Thursday night. The problem is there is not any rain in the forecast for next week.I'm not sure if I should go ahead and plant on Thursday and hope for the best, or if I should try and wait another week to see if they put some more rain in the forecast. My mixes are mostly rape, oats, austrian winter peas, wheat, turnips, buckwheat, and wintergreen peas. I'm curious to here what everyones opinion is. ildrhntr
I would wait unless they up our chances of rain last I looked it was only 30%. But if you feel you need to get them out I would use a no-till drill that way what moisture you have will remain there and might be enough to get it started
Tominator
We went ahead and planted and we are hoping for rain. You should get that seed down before mid month I'd say so that you're not hurt by cold weather.
wtnhunt
Wait til the last minute and look at the radar in motion and see what you think it is going to do. I have been burned by forecasts too many times to count on them.
dogdoc
IMO the worst thing that can happen is to plant and immediately get a small rain to germinate the seeds. This is when the plant is the most vulnerable since it barely has any root structure. If you don't get rain shortly after or don't have good sub-surface moisture those young plants can die in a hurry. Saying that--sometimes we don't have choices when we plant--we just plant when we can.
RackBlaster
I say go ahead and plant. With the cool moist evenings we have been having and rain in the forecast the soil is holding a ton of moisture to germinate the seed and get a good start. I usually plant my fall plots around this time and don't even worry about the rain, and they come out great every year. The early morning dew is enough to get things going. Happy planting. That's kind of what I was thinking. Our morning dews have been pretty heavy for a few weeks now.It also looks like they've added a chance of rain for next Thursday, and with a 50% chance tonight,I think I'm going to go ahead and get it planted. Thanks for the help guys!
