fly
Does human urine effect deer and if so how? I've always heard that deer will smell human urine and avoid those areas. I'm planning to hunt all day in a treestand this year and was wondering what is better: A) stay put and pee from the tree. -or- B) get down and walk 100-200 yards away then go back. Option B creates noise and may leave scent from walking. I'm not sure about option A???? Thanks
Tominator
Might want to do a search on this topic; it has been discussed here in the past. In my experience, it will actually attract a lot of deer, especially the does.
slughunter
From what I hear and read, it has absolutely no affect on the deer. -shane
wtnhunt
Think getting down and walking is a big mistake if you plan on an all day sit. Have seen deer and had deer come in close too many times to count within very short times of urinating, really do not think it bothers them in any way at all. jbaker
If it is a real concern, a guy Ikonw who is a scent fanatic, takes a two liter bottle with him and ties it to a tree limb, then gets rid of it after he hunts.
Bowtech_archer07
From my experience, human urine has no effect on deer whatsoever. and like Tominator said, oftentimes it will attract a few deer. I would stay put and pee from the tree. I had a friend who peed, had a yearling sniff it, then the yearling walked out and fed, and he shot the doe that followed. NY_Bowhunter14
has zero effect in my experience... seems to attract both bucks and does...
fly
Thanks for the replies everyone. Looks like a unanimous decision. I'll set the pee free from the tree. I'm sure it was my dad who told me that when I was first learning to hunt over 20 years ago. Don't get me wrong I love my dad and am thankful to still be sharing deer camp with him. However, I have to say he was NOT a very good teacher when it came to deer hunting. Probably why he only gets a deer about every 5 years. Of course he tells me it's because he's waiting on a big one. Guest BOJO
I dont think it has any affect at all.I have allways gone from my tree stand and seen plenty of deer ,bucks included. One time I had a doe stop and smell the spot were I had releived myself and she didnt spook but hung around in the area for a little while. Leo
I have peed while there were does 40yds away under my stand. It was either that or wet my pants. They were interested in the noise it made as it hit the ground but not spooked by it. They stayed another 25minutes. Since then I never worried about it. turningcustomcalls
My dad also taught me that pee would scare off all the deer. This has been a helpful thread. I have always wondered about that. Thanks
JKAPP01
i think there is something out there called a little john or a big john or something, that you can pee into and seal it back up and keep it in a seperate compartment on your hunting backpack. thats what i am going to get for this fall. just going to have to make sure you don't eat anything the day before that is going to cause your bowels to move. thats where the trouble comes
Shaun_300
I haven't had any bad luck from going for a pee out of the tree or around my watch on the ground. I don't think the deer are scared of it.
ruttinbuc
I remember running late to a spot one time and after getting to the tree I couldn't control my bladder. Had to go right then and there. I moved a few steps below the tree and relieved myself. Later, as bad luck would have it, a big buck came in from behind me and was standing right below me. Nothing I could do. I figured he would move on out to the field I was hunting and I'd get a shot. Instead, he turns and puts his nose right in the wet spot. That buck turned inside out and got out of there in a second! Talk about being bummed. Never again will I go without a bottle....regardless of what others have observed in deer behavior around urine. GWSmith
As it's been said this topic has been relieved many times here before:D My own research, which is still on going,...lol...has proved to me they dont get bothered at all. I hunted an area which had an established scrape which I went in on my way to and from the stand. Each time I went back the ground had been cleared and there were new deer tracks in the scrape...even after it had snowed! Late in the season I hunted the area 3 days straight with a foot of snow over top of the scrape. I continued to go where I knew the scrape was. I would arrive the next morning only to find all the snow had been removed completely to the ground again. I'm of the opinion now that they can only tell the urine is male or female after 10-15 minutes, that going in a scrape is a challenge to a buck, and that making a mock scrape near the tree your going to be in is really sneaky(especially if your smart and drink alot of apple juice)...but effective! ...and NO...I wont bottle it:D
dbHunterNY
I've never had deer spooky from urinating around my treestand or hunting area. I've gone right off the side of the stand and had deer come in to my tree, check it out, and walk away like they didn't care. If you ever have a big buck though I gotta think he'd know something was akward and would at least be more cautious. I'd rather have no trace of me in the woods, but sometimes you just can't help it. - Dan
superguide
Up here in Canada you'll scare more deer fumbling around in -30 trying to hit the mouth of the bottle-it's noisy too. I cured guys I guided of handing me frozen jugs of urine by whizzing on the bait pile lol.
Guest pcm
I have a big ole' empty "wide-mouthed" laundry bottle (TIDE) in my tree stand. Never a problem for my small appendage! Empty it at camp at the end of the day..............Replace it every season...
