Swamphunter
I want to get a GPS or whatever they are for my wifes car, (one that talks), so she can find her way around. Have any recommendations? Simple operation (maybe hands free voice activated) Thanks
Master_Chief
I have a tomtom. One of my kids has one and the over has a Garmin Nuvi. They are all basically the same, some have bluetooth for hands free which I recommend getting as some places are outlawing handheld cell phones. Tomtom is very simple to operate and have very intuitive menus.
OJR
I have a Garmin with the wide screen. I does not tell you the street names, but is very accurate. It was a life saver on our recent trip. I would recommend getting one with the widest screen possible because they have bigger numbers on the keypads. If I were to get a different one, I would stick to the Garmin!
WHISKEYSWAMP
I have a tom tom... haven't used it much but will be on my way to Wyoming. It doesn't always give me the route I want to take but automatically updates pretty quick.

Flintlock1776
Everyone will have their preference. I found that the Garmin Nuvi 350 I got was cheaper on line than in Wal Mart's store as they are trying to build up their online store. Free S&H to the store just go there and pick it up. Nice option if Wal Mart is clsoe enough to home. Pretty good deal I have one in all of my vehicles now, much easier than trying to lend one out to the wife and kids. As long as it announces the street/road you need to turn on I am fine. The higher end versions put MP players and other frill I don't need but maybe some folks do want (again, all my vehicles have XM radio so I don't need the MP3 deal in GPS). Then there is the size of screen deal. Bigger is nicer but I can deal fine with my NUVI 350. So, check them all out and see what you really want vs. some of the extraneous stuff they add on to increase the price.
ny_gun
I purchased the TomTom One about a year ago. I have been very pleased with it. It is a very basic GPS as I did not feel I needed all of the 'extra' features (Hand Free Phone, MP3 Player, Video, Games, etc..) some have. I payed $199. Now I belive they are around $150. JJL
If I'm on the road I prefer to use Rand- McNally. If I'm in the field I prefer to "use the force". 45 years of navigating the world and I've never been lost....................I have taken the scenic route on several occasions though. BowJoe
As a truck driver, i feel like we have a little more weight with our opinion (no fat jokes please). I recently bought the Garmin nuvi 200. Although I still have to watch where i drive a big truck, you should never replace common sense w/a gadget. I love using this thing and as long as I watch for restricted routes and low bridges, it has gotten me everywhere i wanted to go. I've navigated from Jacksonville, FL to Downtown Chicago and all points in between. The thing I like about Garmin is that you can find anywhere you need to stop along your route and still keep the route. I've planned my stops along an entire route including fuel, rest areas and truck stops and even had to find a place to get a semi tire repaired that was way out of route. I've pretty much put it through it's paces and give it a 4.5 out of 5. I only wish they had this specially for truck drivers. You can route for either the fasted route, shortest route or off road. You can pick whether you're on a bicycle, walking or in a car. You can also pick the icon that represents your vehicle. a car, van, arrow or a monster truck. I like the monster truck and you can pick a 3D map, top view map and zoom in and out. it also has an auto night time mode. You can see every detail of yer trip and look ahead for turns. it counts down til time to turn. hope i helped.
