Strut10
Re: help!!!!!!!!! BBSH......... Practice. Period. Leave a call in your mouth as much as you can........and practice. The quicker you figure out what techniques don't make a good turkey sound, the sooner you'll figure out the ones that do. My biggest piece of advice would be: Bring your air with your belly muscles, NOT your lungs or cheeks. Or maybe just stick with the H.S. Strut Black Magic. With 72 turkeys to its credit........you must be doing something right.
dodge4x4
Re: help!!!!!!!!! ok, first that is me callin turkeys in for people, when im not shootin, 2nd.....wow....you found that entry quick...lol. my first problem is that i keep one in my mouth constantly but i can never figure out how to do it. and i want to know b/c when i hunt bymyself, i cant call and shoot at the same time, and as a fellow turkey hunter you must know keepin still is a necessity...........ive only ever shot 3 that OTHER people called in and then 4 from treestands in the fall w/ my black magic. thanks for the advice
Strut10
Re: help!!!!!!!!! Trying to teach someone to run a diaphragm is just danged hard. Any other call, a fellow can see exactly what's taking place. But with a mouth call......... Try this: Without a call in your mouth, breathe out from your belly (don't blow.......BREATHE) like you just climbed a hill. You're saying "haaa, haaa" or something like that. You're "huffing & puffing". Now........do the same thing, except put your tongue to the roof of your mouth so the "haaa, haaa" comes out "thh, thh". That's how your basic yelp should be started when the call's in your mouth. Put the call in and try to get a one-note, drawn out sound from saying "thhhhhhhhhhhhh". When you can control that note fairly well in a tone that kinda sounds like a turkey, say "thhhhhhh-yaw". Try to drop your jaw (open your mouth) a bit on the "yaw" part. Practice trying that for a spell, then let me know how it's going.

The call needs to be against the roof of your mouth back in approximately 1/2 a gnat's eyelash in front of your gag reflex. Seriously. They should not be sticking together anywhere.

[ QUOTE ] The call needs to be against the roof of your mouth back in approximately 1/2 a gnat's eyelash in front of your gag reflex. Seriously. [/ QUOTE ] Sometimes it's even closer than that. My early morning gag reflex is unreal! Some calls are easier to start with than others. It varies with different individuals. For me I did best on Lohman diaphrams. The tape they used just helped me keep the call in place better. As I got more experience I could play just about any of them. So don't get married to one call if it's not working for you. Try a few otherrs to see if they'll work any better for you. Good Luck! Borch
