Tominator
If it was that big, it's a cicada killer for sure. I've only seen 1 or 2 in my life, and they both scared the bajeebers out of me.
KirkV
Yes it is a cicada killer or a digger bee as they are called also. They actually catch the cicada and bury it in the ground as food for their young to feed on until it is time to hatch out again. They love bare patches of dirt in your lawn or along the road to dig into. They hate a full thick lawn and will not be found around one usually. Shaun_300
I think they're the same kind that made a nest in my lawn a few years back. I was cutting the grass and a whole swarm came out at me! I got stung twice in the stomach.

ildrhntr
Learn somewthing new everyday. I wondered what the heck those things were. When I was building my house I saw those things going into hole in the dirt where my yard is now. Good thing my wife never saw them or I would still be living in town....LOL
LifeNRA
Pretty sure its a Cicada killer ... Steve Its called a Digger Wasp, and yes you are correct. They search out and destroy the cicada's! I seen one here for the first time last week. They are huge! I was watching it dig around the grass for a bit then I decided to grab my camera. Naturally it was gone by the time I got out.
arrow32
Now that is a cool looking insect. Not sure if I've ever saw one man I don't watch things.
Norm Sauceman
I just saw about a dozen of them the other day in my back yard. They were all gathered around a black ant den at the base of a white oak tree. I will see if they are still there and post a pick of them all.
